A Place to Breathe

1050 Words
Mia didn’t ask too many questions at first, and I was grateful for that. The moment she pulled me inside her house, everything felt warmer, softer, like the world had slowed down just enough for me to breathe again. Her room smelled faintly of vanilla and books, a familiar scent that made my chest ache in a different way. I sat on the edge of her bed, my hands resting in my lap, still shaking slightly, while she moved around quietly, giving me space but staying close enough to remind me I wasn’t alone. “You can talk to me,” she said gently, sitting beside me, her voice soft and careful. I swallowed, my throat tight, my eyes burning again as everything I had been holding back started to rise. “I don’t even know where to start,” I whispered. She didn’t push. She just placed her hand over mine, warm and steady. And for a moment, that was enough. My phone rang suddenly, the sharp sound cutting through the quiet. I flinched slightly, my heart jumping as I looked down at the screen. Kael. My chest tightened instantly. I stared at it, my fingers hovering over the screen, but I couldn’t bring myself to answer. Not yet. Not after everything. The phone kept ringing. Mia glanced at it, then at me. “Are you going to pick that?” she asked softly. I shook my head quickly. “I can’t,” I said, my voice low. “Not right now.” The phone rang again. And again. Finally, Mia reached for it before I could stop her. “Mia—” I started, but she had already answered. “Hello?” she said calmly. I watched her face carefully, my heart racing as she listened. “She’s here,” Mia added after a second. “At my house.” There was a short pause, then she nodded slightly. “Okay.” She ended the call and looked at me. “He’s coming,” she said simply. My chest tightened again, but this time it wasn’t just fear. It was something more complicated. I didn’t know how to feel about him anymore. About everything. Minutes passed slowly, each second stretching longer than the last, until finally, there was a knock at the door. Mia stood up, glancing at me once before walking out of the room. I could hear faint voices from the hallway, then footsteps getting closer. The door opened, and Kael stepped in. The moment I saw him, everything inside me shifted again. He looked serious, his eyes searching the room until they landed on me. For a second, neither of us said anything. The silence between us felt heavy, filled with everything we hadn’t said. Mia looked between us, then gave me a small, understanding smile. “I’ll give you guys a moment,” she said softly before stepping out and closing the door behind her. Now it was just us. I looked away first, my hands tightening together as I tried to steady my breathing. I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know where to begin. “Lyra,” Kael said quietly. His voice was softer than usual, careful. I didn’t respond immediately. I just sat there, staring at the floor. “I didn’t know where else to go,” I admitted finally, my voice barely above a whisper. He stepped closer slowly, not rushing, like he was giving me time. “You’re safe here,” he said. I let out a small, shaky breath. “I don’t feel safe anywhere anymore,” I said honestly. That seemed to hit him. I could feel it in the way the air shifted slightly. He moved closer again, stopping just in front of me. “You’re not alone,” he said. I looked up at him then, my eyes meeting his. Something in his expression softened, and for a moment, everything else faded. “It doesn’t feel that way,” I whispered. There was a pause. Then slowly, he reached out. His fingers brushed lightly against my cheek, warm and careful, like he was afraid I would pull away. My breath caught as he gently moved a strand of my hair back, his touch lingering just a little longer than it should have. My heart started to beat faster, not from fear this time, but from something else. Something softer. Something deeper. “You don’t have to carry this alone,” he said quietly. The space between us felt smaller now. Warmer. I didn’t move. I didn’t pull away. His hand stayed near my face, his fingers tracing lightly, sending a soft shiver down my spine. My thoughts blurred, my emotions mixing together in a way I couldn’t separate anymore. The hurt. The fear. The confusion. And something else that had been there all along. Something I had tried to ignore. “Kael…” I whispered, not even sure what I wanted to say. But he didn’t let me finish. He closed the distance between us. His lips met mine softly at first, like he was giving me a chance to stop him. But I didn’t. I couldn’t. My breath caught as everything around me seemed to fade away. The world outside didn’t matter in that moment. The pain didn’t matter. The truth didn’t matter. It was just him. Just us. The kiss deepened slowly, naturally, like it had been waiting to happen for a long time. His hand moved gently to the back of my head, holding me close, not forcing, just keeping me there. Safe. Warm. I felt myself relax without even realizing it, my hands slowly gripping his shirt as I leaned into him. I responded to the kiss, letting myself feel it, letting myself forget everything else, even if it was just for a moment. My heart raced, but it didn’t hurt anymore. It felt alive. When we finally pulled apart, my breathing was uneven, my thoughts still spinning. I looked up at him, my eyes searching his, trying to understand what I was feeling. He didn’t say anything at first. He just stayed there, close, his forehead almost touching mine. “I’m here,” he said quietly. And for the first time in a long time— I believed it
