The air shifted again, and suddenly I felt it—that same energy from before, but this time it wasn’t coming from me. It was coming from him. Strong. Controlled. Dangerous. My breath caught as I stared at him, really seeing him for the first time. The way he stood. The way his eyes seemed to glow faintly under the moonlight. The way everything about him felt… powerful. “You’re one of them,” I said slowly, the realization creeping in despite how much I wanted to deny it. “A werewolf,” he confirmed. The word sent a shiver through me. “No,” I whispered immediately, stepping back again. “That’s not real. It can’t be real.” “And yet you felt it,” he said softly. “You fought one tonight. You felt your instincts awaken. Your senses sharpen. Your strength rise.” He took another step closer, his voice lowering. “You felt the wolf.” My heart pounded painfully in my chest as his words echoed in my mind. Because he was right. I had felt it. Every part of it. And I couldn’t deny it anymore. “But I’m not…” I started, my voice breaking. “I’m not like that.” “You are,” he said firmly. The certainty in his voice broke something inside me. Tears burned at the corners of my eyes, but I forced them back, shaking my head. “No. I’m just… me.” Kael’s expression softened then, something almost gentle flickering across his face as he stepped closer, closing the distance between us. “You are you,” he said quietly. “But you’re also more than that.” I caught my breath when he slowly extended his hand to brush some of the damp hair from my face. It was gentle, cautious, as if he were afraid I would vanish if he didn’t do it carefully. I felt my heart flutter with a shift in energy between us that took the edge off this crazy situation. "Why didn't you say anything?" I whispered, my voice barely under control. He paused before pulling his hand away from my face. "Because it wasn’t the right time," he said. "Whose time was that?" This time there was no answer. A familiar tightness began to build within me. "So, my life... everything about me, all of it, was supposed to be planned?" He said nothing to disagree. Anger flared inside me, mixing with hurt and confusion. “You don’t get to decide that!” I snapped. “You don’t get to watch me, follow me, control what I know about myself!” “I wasn’t controlling you,” he said quickly, stepping closer again. “I was protecting you.” “From what?!” “From what you are,” he said, his voice breaking slightly this time. The words hit deep. Silence followed, heavy and painful. I stared at him, my emotions tangled together in a way I couldn’t sort out. Anger. Fear. Confusion. And something else. Something softer. Something I didn’t want to name. “Then tell me,” I said finally, my voice quieter now. “Tell me what I am.” Kael hesitated again, but this time, when he spoke, there was no holding back. “You’re not just a werewolf,” he said slowly. “You’re something far more powerful. Your blood… it’s tied to the Moon Goddess herself. You’re her daughter, Lyra. Hidden in the human world to protect you from those who would hunt you, control you, or destroy you.” The world seemed to tilt. My breath left me completely as his words sank in. “That’s not…” I started, but I couldn’t finish. Because somewhere deep inside me, something responded to those words. Something that felt… true. “All these years,” he continued, his voice softer now, “you’ve been watched. Guarded. Every step, every moment. Your life wasn’t an accident. It was planned to keep you safe. To keep your power hidden.” “And you?” I asked, my voice trembling. “Where do you fit into all of this?” His gaze held mine, steady and intense. "I was meant to protect you," he told me. "To be close by your side at all times to ensure that your awakening would not be triggered prematurely." I snorted. "Yeah, that plan worked out real well." His expression hardened. "Things have changed. The balance is off. The wolves are restless; packs are on the move. And whatever attacked you tonight, it wasn’t an accident." The fear came back again, only this time cold. "What are you trying to tell me?" I demanded. "It means that they've found you," he whispered. My heart leapt into my throat. And then, as if on cue, a distant howl came from somewhere in the woods. We both froze in place. Then, just like that, Kael tensed up. His gaze darkened, and I watched helplessly as he focused his hearing and senses on the noise. "Not good," he muttered. Another howl followed. Closer this time. My heart began to race again. "Kael..." He turned back to look at me, his expression deadly serious. "We need to leave now," he said urgently. "Leave? Where do you expect me to go?" I asked. "Somewhere that they won't find you," he replied. And another howl broke through the darkness, closer than ever before. Kael grabbed my hand suddenly, pulling me toward him as his grip tightened. “Whatever happens,” he said, his voice low and intense, “stay close to me. Don’t let go.” My fingers tightened around him without thinking. The air around us shifted again, heavier, darker, filled with something dangerous. And in that moment, standing under the full moon with his hand holding mine, I realized something that made my heart race for a completely different reason. I wasn’t just afraid of what was coming. I was afraid of how much I trusted him. And as the shadows around us began to move— I knew this was only the beginning.
