Chapter 3

An I wandered aimlessly around the room, searching for something—anything—to distract me before breakfast arrived. Theo had hidden all of my art supplies to avoid raising suspicion, so that wasn’t an option. For a brief moment, I considered lying in his bed, knowing that his scent would linger in the pillows, surrounding me in a way that might be comforting. But if I did that, Lilith would probably pick up on my scent and get upset. It seemed like no matter what I did, there was always a risk of doing something that Lilith wouldn’t like. And after everything that had happened in the last twenty-four hours, I was already too anxious to sit in silence with my own thoughts. It was making everything worse. I just wanted to close my eyes and not wake up until she was gone. Until things were back to the way they were supposed to be. A sudden knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts. I let out a quiet breath of relief, assuming my food had arrived surprisingly fast. I hurried to the door, ready to greet the servant with a genuine smile. But the second I opened it, my smile vanished. It wasn’t breakfast. It was Lilith. Just Lilith alone. My eyes darted past her, searching for any sign of Theo. Where’s Theo? There was none. My stomach twisted. oh no this is not good. This is bad. So bad. “Hello, pet,” she said dismissively, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. I instinctively stepped aside, watching in uncomfortable silence as she strode across the room and into the closet, heading straight for her bag. For a moment, I debated whether or not I should close the door. Leaving it open made me feel like I had an escape route, but at the same time, something as simple as not closing it might set her off. I hesitated before finally shutting it, telling myself I was overthinking things. If she was this obsessed with being around Theo, then he had to know she was here… right? I watched her closely as she rummaged through her bag, my nerves on edge. After a few moments, she glanced at me, probably noticing the look on my face. “Your Master is downstairs having breakfast,” she said, barely sparing me a glance. “I told him I needed to grab something from my room but forgot that it was actually in here, so… thanks for opening the door.” Her words didn’t sound entirely sincere. She was playing at something. She definitely has something planned in mind that’s why she’s here alone. “Oh,” I replied softly, unsure if she even wanted a response. But my anxiety spiked. The fact that Theo didn’t know she was here sent alarm bells blaring in my head. I didn’t know what to do except stand there, silently praying that my food would arrive soon and break this unbearable tension. And then—she turned to fully face me, her golden eyes slowly raking over me in quiet contemplation. A beat of silence passed before she finally spoke. “What’s your blood type?” I stiffened, my breath catching in my throat. She couldn’t be serious. She couldn’t be serious. Oh Noo. “AB-Negative,” I answered, forcing myself to sound steady despite the fear curling in my stomach. But judging by the grin that spread across her face, she had heard the way my heart stuttered. She liked the fear she was causing. Her tongue flicked across her lips as she took a slow, deliberate step toward me. “Really?” she mused, tilting her head. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had AB-Negative straight from the source.” I felt like a deer trapped in headlights. My brain screamed at me to move, to run, to do something. But my body wouldn’t listen. I was immobile too terrified. I was trembling by the time she was standing directly in front of me, clearly enjoying how terrified I had become. I prayed—begged—for Theo to walk through that door. Lilith wouldn’t actually consider drinking from me… would she? She had to know how much Theo wouldn’t like that. Unless… he had never told her. A quiet, fearful whimper escaped me when she reached out, dragging her fingertip along the still-visible bite mark Theo had left on my neck. I instinctively flinched away. “You don’t think Theo would mind if I had a taste, do you?” she murmured, her tongue running over her fangs. “He’s such a nice guy—I doubt he’d mind just this once.” “Why don’t you ask him first?” I suggested, my voice barely above a whisper. I took a single, cautious step backward. “I-I really don’t think that’s a good idea,” I stammered, the air around me feeling thick and suffocating. Lilith scoffed and immediately closed the distance between us. “Of course you don’t,” she said dismissively. “But when have you ever really had a choice in this matter?” I took another step back. She stepped forward. And then another. And another. She barely paused to consider my suggestion before shrugging. “I could ask,” she admitted. “But I’d rather just do it and deal with the consequences later. If Theo’s upset, I’ll make it up to him. That way, we both get what we want in the end.” My legs tensed, ready to run. Not that I had anywhere to go. Lilith continued moving forward at an unhurried pace, forcing me back until I realized, with growing dread, that the wall was right behind me. My stomach dropped. As soon as she had me cornered, she’d strike. Tears burned at the corners of my eyes as panic set in. I was trapped. Wall behind me. Lilith right in front of me. The couch and cage on either side, close enough that she could reach me no matter which direction I tried to run. Even if I did somehow manage to escape her grasp, she was faster. Stronger. She’d catch me in an instant. “I r-really don’t think he’ll like this,” I tried again, my voice trembling. “He hates when other people touch his… things.” Lilith let out a low, menacing chuckle. Then, in an instant, she grabbed my upper arm in a bruising grip and yanked me forward. I let out a sharp gasp, my entire body shaking violently. “I guess we’ll find out then, won’t we?” And before I could even scream, she sank her fangs deep into my flesh. Agony exploded through my body. A scream tore from my throat as I struggled against her hold, trying desperately to break free. Hot tears streamed down my face as her grip tightened, nails digging into my skin. She wasn’t gentle—not in the slightest. Even Ali had been gentler than this. She fed from me greedily, completely ignoring my gasping breaths and trembling limbs. She enjoyed my fear. Despite the searing pain, I fought. This was the one rule Theo had given me. The only rule. And despite everything—despite whatever I truly meant to him—I wanted to follow it. With every ounce of strength I had, I shoved her. The force sent her stumbling backward, her fangs tearing from my skin in a fresh wave of pain. I collapsed to the floor, crying out as I clutched the wound. Adrenaline dulled the pain, but I could still feel the warmth of blood seeping between my fingers. I barely had time to react before I heard her snarl. “You b***h!” she spat. “How dare you!” She added, eyes bulging with rage. I turned just in time to see her grab something from the cage— The crack of a whip cut through the air. A searing pain slashed across my back, ripping a strangled cry from my lips. This is not how expected things to happen.. what an interesting turn of events. other sharp crack against my back forced a strangled cry from my lips, my head automatically lowering toward the floor in surrender. “I can’t believe your nerve,” Lilith spat, bringing the whip down again. “For as long as Theo has kept you alive, I thought you’d have learned your place by now!” Tears streamed freely down my face, mixing with the sweat and pain as the sound of the whip echoed through the room, occasionally accompanied by the sickening rip of fabric. My shirt was in tatters, barely clinging to my body. My throat tightened, the pain so overwhelming that my screams had turned into weak, breathless gasps. Air felt scarce, my lungs straining for relief. Is this how I die? “Theo doesn’t need such a disobedient pet,” she sneered. “And if I have to be the one to whip you into shape for him, then so be it!” I couldn’t run. I couldn’t fight back. I couldn’t even beg her to stop. Even if I could scream, I knew no one would hear me. No one was coming to save me. The strikes kept coming, each one carving fire into my back. I lost track of how many times the whip had lashed across my skin, but Lilith had no intention of stopping. Every fiber of my being screamed at me to move, to do something—anything—but my body refused to obey. I could feel warm blood trickling down my back. Then, suddenly, the assault stopped. The absence of pain was almost disorienting, leaving me hyper-aware of my own trembling, my heart pounding violently in my ears. I didn’t dare look back to see why she had stopped. I was too afraid of what might happen if I did. “Oh, Theo,” Lilith cooed, her breathing slightly uneven. “You’re back early.” My head shot up toward the door. Theo stood there, frozen in place. His eyes were wide, his mouth slightly parted in shock. He barely moved, his gaze darting between me and Lilith like he was struggling to process what he was seeing. Lilith laughed lightly, twirling the whip in her fingers. “Sorry you had to walk in on this,” she said, still catching her breath. “I just had to teach this b***h a quick lesson.” She raised the whip again. Instinctively, I flinched, bracing for another blow. The sharp crack of the whip echoed through the air. But I felt nothing. Instead, Lilith let out a gasp. I turned my head just enough to see what had happened as I caught the shocked look all over Lilith’s face Theo was standing directly behind me, gripping the end of the whip tightly in his hand. His nails had sharpened to deadly points—something I had only ever seen on the night of the Bloodmoon. Without hesitation, he yanked the whip from her grasp, flipping it in his hand before lashing it back at her. The snap was followed by Lilith’s yelp as she staggered backward, clutching her face. When she pulled her hand away, a deep gash ran from the bottom of her jaw to the top of her nose. I watched in shock as the wound slowly began to heal, the torn skin knitting itself back together. But even though her face was unmarked once again, the sheer terror in her eyes remained. “Get out,” Theo ordered, his voice dangerously low. Lilith hesitated, shrinking back. She forced a nervous laugh, attempting to mask the fear in her eyes. “B-But Theo, you don’t understand what she did to me. She—” Theo cut her off with a hand around her throat, his claws digging into her skin. Lilith’s expression shifted to pure terror as she clawed at his grip, gasping for air. “I don’t think you understand how little I care,” he murmured, his tone eerily calm. “And you don’t seem to grasp how lucky you are that your status makes killing you more trouble than it’s worth. Now get out before I change my mind. Stay away from me. Stay away from my brother.” He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper. “And stay far away from Aurora.” Lilith nodded furiously, and the moment he released her, she stumbled back, coughing and gasping for breath. She shot me one last look, then glanced at before vanishing out the door. The room fell into an eerie silence. Theo stood still, his breath heavy with anger. His pupils were razor-thin slits, a clear sign of just how close he was to losing control. As the adrenaline in my system faded, the pain in my back flared to unbearable levels. It was as if every wound had come alive, burning and stinging all at once. My arms trembled, barely keeping me upright. I was on the verge of collapsing when Nico knelt in front of me, his hands gently gripping my upper arms to keep me steady. His entire demeanor had shifted. The fury in his expression melted into concern, his pupils slowly returning to normal as his sharp gaze darted over my injuries. Neither of us spoke. I wasn’t even sure if I could. Theo reached for my wrist, carefully pulling my hand away from a deep gash on my collarbone. His pupils thinned again at the sight, his face contorting with anguish. I could feel my body trembling violently in his grasp. His eyes met mine, searching for permission. I didn’t need to give it—he already knew my answer. A moment later, his mouth was against the wound, his tongue gliding over the torn flesh. A whimper escaped me at the contact, but I knew this would help. Vampire saliva had healing properties. It wouldn’t do much for my back, but it would at least help close this particular wound. Theo moved one of his hands to the back of my head—a gesture he always used to comfort me. And in that moment, my body finally accepted that the threat was gone. The realization hit me like a wave, and my entire body sagged against Theo’s. I broke down completely, sobbing uncontrollably against his shoulder. He didn’t pull away. He didn’t say anything. He just held me, letting me fall apart in his arms. I could hear his heartbeat—rapid and unsteady. Even with his calm exterior, he was panicking. When he finally pulled back, my voice returned, weak and broken. “Theo…” His eyes softened, filled with something I couldn’t quite place. “I know, Aurora,” he murmured. “I’ve got you.” But underneath that reassurance, I heard something else. Guilt. I sobbed harder, wanting nothing more than to wrap my arms around him, to let him make this pain go away like he always did. But I couldn’t even move. “I need you to put your arms around my neck,” he instructed gently. I hesitated. “I can’t…” My voice was barely a whisper. “You can,” he assured me, his thumb brushing against my head. “I know it’s going to hurt, but this is the easiest way for me to help you. Just hold on to me, and I’ll take care of everything else.” I clenched my eyes shut, knowing he was right. With a shaky breath, I forced my arms to move. The pain was instant and searing, but I pushed through it with a choked sob until my arms were looped around his neck. As soon as they were in place, I buried my face against him, holding on as tightly as I could. “Good,” he murmured before carefully lifting me into his arms. I didn’t open my eyes. I didn’t move. I just focused on the steady rhythm of his heartbeat as he carried me away. This version keeps the original emotion and intensity but flows a little smoother. Let me know if you want anything changed further! Here’s the rewritten version with similar meaning but different wording: Keeping my eyes shut made it easier to cope with the pain. Or maybe that was just what I told myself. I heard the bathroom light flick on, followed by the sound of Theo setting me down on the counter in front of the sink. He let go of me, and I listened as he rummaged through the cabinet. I only opened my eyes when I felt the gentle warmth of his hand cupping my face. His gaze met mine—guilt-ridden and heavy. “You’ll feel so much better when you wake up, okay?” His voice was soft, but the worry was unmistakable. “I promise.” I didn’t fully grasp what he meant until I felt the sharp pinch of a needle against my neck. My vision blurred, fading into darkness.
