Chapter EightVada rang for Charity at six o’clock in the morning. When the old maid came hurrying into her bedroom to see if anything was wrong, she told her, “Will you start packing at once, Charity? We are leaving for England.” Charity appeared to be about to argue, but then she said, “And a very good thing too if you ask me, Miss Vada! The sooner we get to England, the sooner we can go back to America and that’s where I want to be.” Vada had anticipated that Charity might make a fuss about having so little time in which to pack. But with the assistance of two chambermaids, they were able to drive off to the Station to catch a train for Calais that left at nine o’clock.
