Hallway Hustle

517 Words
Elianna walked through the crowded hallway, the sound of lockers slamming and students chattering filling the air. She navigated through the sea of familiar faces, exchanging nods and smiles with classmates. Her first period class was English Literature, her favorite subject. As she took her seat, Mrs. Thompson handed out the latest assignment: analyzing a poem by Sylvia Plath. Elianna's heart skipped a beat; she adored Plath's work. The words, the emotions, the struggles – it all resonated with her. She dove into the poem, underlining phrases and jotting down notes. The class discussion was lively, with students sharing their interpretations. Elianna contributed hesitantly at first, but as the discussion progressed, she found her voice. Mrs. Thompson smiled, nodding in approval. For a brief moment, Elianna forgot about her parents, the fights, and the uncertainty. After class, Elianna headed to her locker, grabbing her books for the next period. She ran into her friends, Rachel and Mike, who were chatting about their weekends. Elianna joined in, sharing stories and laughter. It was moments like these that made her feel like a normal teenager. But the respite was short-lived. During lunch, Rachel leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. "Hey, Lia, how's it going? We've been worried about you." Elianna's face grew hot; she hadn't wanted anyone to know about her home life. "It's just the usual, you know?" she said, trying to brush it off. Mike's eyes narrowed. "We've heard rumors, Lia. About your parents. Is everything okay?" Elianna's instincts screamed to deny it, to pretend everything was fine. But something about Mike's genuine concern made her hesitate. "It's complicated," she said finally, hoping they'd drop it. Rachel nodded understandingly. "We're here for you, Lia. If you ever need to talk or need help, we're here." Elianna smiled weakly, appreciating their concern, but unsure how to open up about her home life. The rest of the day flew by in a blur of classes and assignments. Elianna's mind wandered to Ethan, wondering how his day was going. She made a mental note to pick him up from school, to spend some quality time with him. As the final bell rang, Elianna gathered her belongings and headed to the elementary school. She spotted Ethan's bright smile and messy brown hair as he ran towards her. "Hey, Lia! Guess what? We did a math test today, and I got 90%!" Elianna beamed with pride, hugging him tightly. "That's amazing, buddy! I'm so proud of you." As they walked home, Elianna's anxiety crept back in. What would they find when they got home? Would her parents be arguing, or would they be passed out on the couch? She glanced down at Ethan, who was chattering about his day. She forced a smile, determined to shield him from the reality a little longer. The walk home seemed to stretch on forever. Elianna's mind was a jumble of worries, fears, and uncertainties. But with Ethan by her side, she felt a sense of purpose, a reason to keep going. As they approached their apartment, Elianna steeled herself for whatever lay ahead.
