Chapter 4: Her Scent

891 Words
Riven knocked lightly before pushing the door open. “Can I come in? Are you busy?” he asked. Anna, seated at her desk with her laptop, glanced up at him. “Sure, I’m not too busy. Just finished putting the cute princess to sleep,” she said with a soft smile. Riven stepped inside, his hands tucked casually into his pockets. His eyes studied her, searching for a reaction. “The Kets family is hosting a banquet tonight,” he said. “You should attend, it’ll be good for you to socialize and get familiar with the capital’s upper class since you have decided to return to the capital.” Seeing Anna’s neutral expression, he added, “I bought a beautiful dress for you. Make sure you wear it to the banquet… and one more thing, stay away from Steven Kets. He doesn’t play by the rules.” The grand hall of the Kets Family Gala shimmered like a dream. Towering crystal chandeliers bathed the golden room in a soft, decadent glow. The air was heavy with the scent of roses, champagne, and the unspoken promises of the powerful. The moment Anna stepped inside, the atmosphere shifted. All eyes turned. She was a vision of dark seduction; an off-shoulder black silk gown clung to her body like a lover’s desperate grasp. The fabric shimmered with a subtle sheen, every step unveiling a daring slit that kissed her thigh. Her waist was impossibly tiny, cinched to perfection, her curves sculpted as if by an artist’s hand. Tiny black diamonds embroidered along the bodice caught the light with every breath she took. Her skin, pale, luminous; glowed under the chandeliers, a perfect canvas against the dark silk. A slim silver chain graced her elegant neck, dipping into the deep V of her gown. Her hair was pinned up in a messy, exquisite bun, with a few rebellious strands caressing her sharp jawline and delicate collarbone. But it was her eyes that truly captivating; cold, piercing, untouched. Icy, almost glass-like, daring anyone foolish enough to come closer. Anna was no longer a girl. She had become a creature of silent power and devastating beauty. She moved through the crowd like winter’s first storm. silent, breathtaking, untouchable. She commanded attention without trying. Across the room, another presence dominated the space; powerful, magnetic, undeniable. Steven Kets. He stood tall amidst the sea of wealth and ambition, wearing a custom-fitted black suit that looked molded onto his broad shoulders. His crisp white shirt was slightly undone at the collar, hinting at a wildness just beneath the surface. His face was a study in masculine perfection… a sharply carved jawline with a faint dusting of stubble, piercing gray eyes, and a habitual smirk that promised both danger and dark temptation. Power clung to him like a second skin. Steven was the kind of man women dreamed of and men envied. The moment Anna entered, he felt it. A stirring deep within him, primal and restless. A faint, haunting fragrance reached him, pulling at forgotten memories. He narrowed his eyes, searching through the glittering crowd until he found her. Their gazes locked. Across the vast, crowded hall, it was as if they were the only two people in existence. The world melted into background noise. Anna held his stare for a heartbeat; cold and unreadable before she looked away, leaving a spark hanging in the air between them. Steven frowned, unsettled. There was something familiar about her. Something dangerous. And Steven Kets never ignored danger or mystery. ****** The music shifted, elegant waltz notes floating through the golden air. Couples began to pair off, spinning gracefully across the polished floor. Steven moved drawn by a force he couldn’t explain. He had to get closer. He needed to. But as he was not paying attention to his surrounding, danger was faster. Among the swirling guests, an assassin lurking in the shadows tightened his grip around a concealed dagger. His target: Steven Kets. The blade gleamed briefly, inches from its mark. Time slowed. But before steel could meet flesh, a blur of black silk cut through the crowd. Anna moved. Graceful. Lethal. In a single, fluid motion, she caught the assassin’s wrist mid-strike, twisting it back with merciless precision. There was a sickening c***k, a muffled cry and the would-be killer crumpled to the floor at her feet. Gasps rippled across the hall. Steven stood frozen stunned not by the attack, but by the woman now standing before him. Anna’s body thrummed with dangerous energy, her slit gown revealing the strength hidden beneath her delicate frame. Her arms, bare and deceptively soft, had just disarmed a trained killer like it was child’s play. She met Steven’s gaze, cold and detached. “Careful,” she said, her voice a silky, dangerous whisper. “Not everyone in the shadows wishes you well.” And then, without waiting for a response, she disappeared into the crowd like a wisp of smoke, leaving only the faint trail of her intoxicating scent behind. Steven stood there, heart pounding in his chest. That scent… That voice… That feeling… Something ancient and possessive awakened inside him. He didn’t know her name yet. He didn’t know her story. But he knew one thing for sure: He would find her. And this time… he wouldn’t let her slip away.
