CHAPTER 18 The clerk stood behind the desk, staring at Morgan and Charley through crooked spectacles. Morgan leaned against the desk. So Charley wanted one room, eh? Her squared shoulders and tilted chin said she was challenging him. Well, he’d accept her challenge and raise the stakes. He turned toward the clerk and slapped his hand on the counter. “One room it is.” The clerk bobbed his head up and down, his glasses scuttling down his nose. He pushed them back up, then slid the registry across the desk. “Sign this, please. I’ll get your key.” He turned around and took an oval key holder from an open shelf. “That will be five dollars for the night.” Charley walked up to the desk as Morgan pulled money from his pocket. “We’ll split the cost, Morgan.” Morgan laid five bills in the clerk
