Chapter 16 ANNALISA The first aid kit was extensive, thank God. Gladys had always been thorough, keeping supplies for everything from minor scrapes to more serious injuries that occasionally happened in a house with a rambunctious child. I pulled out antiseptic, gauze, medical tape, and—praise whatever deity was listening—a bottle of strong painkillers left over from when Derek had strained his back last year. The antiseptic burned like liquid fire when I poured it over both sides of the wound. I had to stop twice, breathing through waves of nausea, before I could finish cleaning it properly. The bleeding had slowed but hadn't stopped completely—I could see fresh blood welling up from the puncture with each beat of my heart. Pressure. I needed to apply pressure and keep it elevated.
