Chapter 3- The Strange scent

1356 Words
Morning crept through the windows of the pack house with a cold stillness. Aurora sat on the edge of her thin mattress beneath the stairs, her breath shallow, her fingers pressed to her chest. The rejection had left her hollow, but beneath that emptiness something alive stirred in the air. A scent drifted through the cracks in the door. Warm. Ancient. Soft as smoke. She whispered, “What is this? What is happening?” Her heart reacted on its own accord. It pulled her gently, guiding her away from the familiar shadows. Aurora stepped outside. Frost covered the ground and the wind carried the strange scent again. It wrapped around her like a whisper. Her feet moved without her consent. “I shouldn't be leaving the pack house. What am i doing? What is wrong with me?,” she murmured, though she kept walking. Branches brushed her arms as she entered the forest. The deeper she went, the stronger the scent grew. It warmed the cold morning like a fire waiting at the end of a long night. Aurora whispered, “Why….why does this feel familiar.” Leaves rustled ahead. A tall figure emerged from the shadows. He stepped forward with careful movements, eyes sharp and alert. Cyrus. He wore black armor marked with symbols she did not recognize. The moment his gaze landed on her, he stopped so suddenly the wind seemed to pause. Aurora hesitated. “I am so sorry. I did not mean to trespass….” He stared at her in silence before speaking. “ I'm Cyrus….Your scent. It's here. I can feel it.” His voice dropped. “The King was right.” Aurora blinked. “The King?” Cyrus stepped closer, his expression hard to read. “You are the one he felt.” “I do not understand.” Her voice shook. “I don’t know your King.” “You do not need to.” Cyrus knelt as if pulled by instinct. His head lowered. “He felt your pain last night. It tore through him like a blade. He sent me to find you before anyone else could hurt you again.” Aurora’s pulse raced. “That can't be true. No one feels my pain.” “It is true.” Cyrus lifted his head. “You carry something rare. Something sacred.” Aurora stepped back, shaking her head. “No…I am an Omega. I clean floors. I wash laundry. I sleep under the stairs. No one sends warriors for someone like me. You've probably mistaken me for someone else” Cyrus rose slowly. “Someone already has.” Aurora wrapped her arms around herself. “You must be mistaken.” He studied her with calm patience. “I wish I was. But the moment I saw you, I knew the King’s instincts were right. Your scent does not belong to this pack. It belongs to him.” Her breath caught. The world around her seemed to tilt. “A scent cannot belong to someone.” “Yours does.” His voice softened. “I am not allowed to reveal more, but I can promise you this. You are not meant to suffer here.” Aurora’s throat tightened. “I have suffered all my life. That is the only thing I know. There is nothing left for me.” “You are wrong.” Aurora took another step back. “Please stop. I cannot believe this. I cannot let myself hope.” “You do not need to hope,” Cyrus answered. “You only need to breathe. The rest will come.” Before Aurora could respond, a furious voice sliced through the trees. “There you are.” Marla stormed into the clearing, her eyes blazing. She pointed at Aurora. “You worthless girl. You ran from your chores after everything last night. Do you think pity gives you freedom? Answer me?” Aurora lowered her gaze. “I am sorry. I did not mean to wander so far.” “You mean nothing.” Marla raised her hand. “You will learn that today.” Cyrus moved before Aurora could blink. He stepped between them, his arm lifted with smooth precision. Marla’s hand collided with his, but he did not budge. The strike stopped as if the air itself had turned solid. Marla staggered back. “What do you think you are doing.” Cyrus looked at her with cold calm. “Do not dare touch her.” Marla’s eyes widened. “You dare stand in my way. I am the caretaker of this pack house. She is mine to discipline.” “She belongs to no one here,” Cyrus said. Aurora trembled, “Please. This will only make things worse . Do not make things harder for me.” Cyrus did not turn. “I do not answer to her.” Marla scoffed. “You think you can walk into Blackthorn territory and tell us what to do.” “I am not thinking,” Cyrus replied. “I am stating a fact.” Marla stepped back carefully, caution replacing anger. “You have no right to interfere.” Cyrus’ gaze sharpened. “I have every right. I am here on orders.” Marla frowned. “Whose orders.” “You do not have clearance to know.” Aurora watched fear slip into Marla’s posture. The usual cruel confidence cracked, replaced by uncertainty. Marla’s voice trembled slightly. “This girl is nothing. She is an Omega. Why would anyone give orders concerning her.” Cyrus turned slightly, enough for Aurora to see the seriousness in his eyes. “You may not understand now, but you will. Something bigger than you has already begun. You should walk away if you wish to avoid trouble.” Marla opened her mouth, shut it, then backed away slowly. “This is not over. She belongs in the pack house, not with strange men in the forest.” Cyrus spoke without looking at her. “Take one more step toward her and you will regret it.” Marla swallowed hard and hurried back through the trees. Aurora stood frozen. Every part of her felt shaken. She whispered, “I have never seen her scared before.” Cyrus shifted his attention fully to Aurora. “She should be.” Aurora hugged herself again. “You do not understand. If I go back, she will find a way to punish me when no one is watching.” “You are not going back,” Cyrus said. Aurora stared at him, shocked. “But….I cannot leave. This is my pack. I have nowhere else to go.” “Your pack rejected your bond,” he said quietly. “Your pack sent you to your knees last night. Your pack watched you suffer and did nothing.” Aurora felt her throat close. “This is all I have ever known. I'm used to this.” “And that is the tragedy,” Cyrus replied. Aurora shook her head. “Why me. Why would your King care about a girl like me.” Cyrus hesitated, then answered. “Because the moment you cried out, his heart answered.” Aurora felt the forest grow still around them. “What does that mean.” “It means your life is about to change.” His voice lowered. “And none of what is coming is small.” Aurora backed away a single step, her voice shook terribly. “I’m so scared.” “I know,” Cyrus said. “But I am here to bring you to safety. You are no longer alone.” Aurora looked at her hands, then back at him. “I do not know how to leave.” “Then let me show you.” He offered his hand. Not as a command. Not as a savior. But as a bridge into a world she never believed she deserved. The forest around them seemed to shift, as if the trees themselves leaned closer to witness her choice. Aurora slowly reached forward. Her fingers brushed his. And the world she knew began to c***k open.
