On the second day, Tianxin still brought breakfast for Yan Heng, but he didn't eat any of it. He returned the untouched breakfast back to her, and this had been going on for a week. The nearby classmates had been enjoying free breakfast for a whole week.
Gradually, the entire first-year class knew about how Jiang Tianxin was being sweet and thoughtful by bringing breakfast to Yan Heng, but he kept rejecting her in different ways.
Tianxin woke up early today and didn't go to the cafeteria. Instead, she went to a breakfast shop outside the school. There were several breakfast shops at the entrance of the school, and she chose a well-reputed one, which had been around for a long time. She had tried their vegetable pancake before, and it tasted great.
These past two days, Tianxin had been feeling troubled. Not only did her whole dormitory advise her not to do anything futile, but even when she went to fetch water or use the restroom, she could hear various rumors about her.
Tianxin looked at the vegetable pancake in her hand. Yesterday, she saw Yan Heng clutching his stomach, and she didn't know how to feel about it. She felt a bit uncomfortable and helpless. Tianxin carried the breakfast and walked up to the teaching building. Several people stood in the corridor, eyeing her up and down. They whispered to each other from time to time. Tianxin knew that they weren't saying anything good. Not everyone in this world is full of good intentions, and malicious speculations usually arise from their whispers. She couldn't distinguish between the truth and falsehood and decided to follow her heart.
Tianxin wanted to quickly walk to her classroom while carrying her breakfast, but she didn't expect to be blocked by a girl in the corridor. "What do you want?" Tianxin tightened her grip on the breakfast. Being surrounded by people like this, she wanted to leave as soon as possible.
"You're that pathetic little dog who sticks to Yan Heng shamelessly, even when he ignores you," the girl said. Tianxin could tell that she was a second-year student from her uniform. The school pants were narrow and changed into slim-fitting ones. She tied her hair into a ponytail, and the tips of her hair were dyed orange.
"It's none of your business," Tianxin said, her face turning red from anger.
The girl was irritated by Tianxin's appearance, and she was the one who had warned her before. "Hmph, know your place. Don't think that just because you sit next to him, you have a good relationship with him. Stay away from him in the future. As for this breakfast, don't buy it anymore. You're wasting your parents' money. If they find out, they'll regret it," she said.
"Don't go too far," Tianxin bit her lip.
The girl bumped into Tianxin and passed by her. Tianxin stumbled, and the vegetable pancake in her hand fell to the ground. Tianxin stood there, motionless. Her nose felt sour, and tears just wouldn't stop flowing from her eyes.
The girl had not taken a few steps when Yan Heng came out of the classroom, followed by a few classmates from Class 5, Zhu Ting and Zhong You walking behind him. The girl stood there bewildered.
One by one, students came up the stairs and watched this scene. Yan Heng's eyes were icy cold, and he emitted a violent aura all over his body. His blood was boiling, and he only had one thought in his mind: to tear apart the person who bullied her.
Tianxin saw Yan Heng losing control and rushed up to grab his arm. Yan Heng was pulled back to reason and looked at Tianxin's worried eyes. He suddenly felt like a jerk, a bad person.
He didn't say anything, bent over and picked up the breakfast from the ground, and wolfed it down. "Don't eat," Tianxin wanted to stop him, but Yan Heng sidestepped her. He ate quickly, and even though it had fallen on the ground, it was still in the plastic bag.
Yan Heng quickly finished the sandwich, and everyone present was scared. The girl timidly called out "Yan Heng." Yan Heng, with red eyes, coldly uttered "Get lost," and the girl turned pale and ran down the stairs.
The whole corridor suddenly fell silent. Everyone walked away dejectedly. Zhu Ting and Zhong You stood there, suddenly feeling a painful feeling they couldn't describe. It was dense and made it difficult to breathe.
Tianxin returned to her seat, looked outside the window, rubbed her eyes, and turned red. She turned into a rabbit whenever she cried.
"I'm sorry," Yan Heng's low voice rang in Tianxin's ear.
Tianxin suddenly didn't know where to put her hand, did she have a hallucination? Wasn't this the three words he hated the most? "It's not your fault. I won't bring breakfast again. No need to apologize."
"I..." Yan Heng hesitated to speak. "Can you take me with you next time you bring breakfast?" Yan Heng looked pitifully at Tianxin, hoping for her agreement.
"Sure," Tianxin took out a small notebook from her pencil case. Yan Heng looked at the pink notebook and didn't react for a while. "What's that for?"
"Last week's breakfast money. I don't like to owe people money," Tianxin said seriously, blushing. Yan Heng felt inexplicably cute. "I didn't bring cash. You can send me the money on WeChat."
Tianxin wrote down her WeChat ID in the notebook. "What do you like to eat? Tell me the amount, and I'll bring it to you in the morning."
"If you want to eat breakfast outside, I can also bring it for you," Yan Heng glanced at the WeChat ID and memorized it. He then handed the notebook to Tianxin, who nodded in agreement.
Both of them breathed a sigh of relief upon reaching an agreement, especially Yan Heng. He was afraid that she would be angry and never speak to him again. After all, he was partly responsible for what had happened today.
"Are you only concerned about me because of someone else's request? Refusing me for a week and still bringing me breakfast," Yan Heng didn't know why he was so hung up on this, but he wanted to know.
Jiang Tianxin stopped flipping through her book and fell silent. She only spoke when she got to the part she needed to memorize for today. "The teacher said that you're my classmate, so our relationship is closer than with other people. They asked me to help you take care of yourself, and I also care about you. But why should I do what they say? Can't I just be kind and care about you?"
She didn't want to watch Yan Heng ruin his own health, not because of someone's request. She wasn't that saintly, and it hurt a bit to be talked about behind her back.
Yan Heng's blood boiled, and the hard shell around his heart seemed to crack slightly, letting in a beam of light. "Why do you care about me?" After all, he wasn't the closest person to her.
"Because you're my classmate," she said.
"Then do you care about your previous classmates as much as you care about me?" Yan Heng's emotions started to rise. Tianxin didn't notice his slight change and thought back to her previous classmates. "No, they were all doing better than me and didn't need my help. You're the most special one," and indeed, Yan Heng was her most special classmate.
Yan Heng was overjoyed when he heard this. He was the most special classmate, unlike those other flashy and cheap classmates.
During the day, Yan Heng would sleep, and occasionally he would daydream. Tianxin knew he had insomnia and wondered if she should find some way to treat it. There were always ways to find a solution, whether it was a physiological or psychological reason.
No teacher would scold Yan Heng for sleeping in class as long as he didn't disrupt the class. It was a complete surrender, a "do-whatever-you-want" attitude as long as it didn't affect the class order.
During evening self-study, Yan Heng was really bored. Watching Tianxin diligently do her homework was really uninteresting. He could see the answer at a glance, and it was a waste of his ink and paper.
"The math teacher praised you for doing a good job on your homework," Tianxin's sudden remark made Yan Heng excited. He didn't even know when the math teacher had praised him. Maybe it was during his dream of Zhuangzi's butterfly. But hearing the pride in his little classmate's voice made him feel like he was in love with doing homework.
Yan Heng was in a good mood. He took out his math homework and textbook, but as he looked at the smooth, unblemished pages of the book, he stuttered, "What's the homework?"
Tianxin pulled out her own math textbook and said, "Questions one and two on page nineteen. You can do the rest in the book. Do you need help with anything else?" She couldn't help but ask.
"Sure," Yan Heng said. After all, he didn't seem to have anything else to do. Tianxin wrote down all the homework assigned for today on a sticky note and said, "You can do it yourself. If there's anything you don't understand, we can discuss it together."
There were really very few things in the book that he didn't understand. "Okay," he said. However, he was now a poor student, and he figured he might sound crazy saying something like that.
Yan Heng worked on the homework for a while, occasionally glancing over at Tianxin. Under the orange light, her profile was really beautiful, and even the way she worked on the thinking questions was cute. Yan Heng thought to himself that his seatmate was really cute.
He couldn't help but lean over to take a look at what Tianxin was writing. But Tianxin subconsciously protected her workbook like a mother hen protecting her chicks. "I'm not trying to copy you. I just want to see how you're doing," Yan Heng said.
Tianxin shook her head. "My handwriting is ugly," she said. She really didn't want Yan Heng to see her ugly handwriting.
Yan Heng didn't expect that to be the reason. He couldn't help but smile. Were all girls this cute? Why hadn't he noticed that there were such cute girls before?
"I won't look. You continue writing," Yan Heng said, backing away. "I finished my homework. Do you want me to check yours?" Tianxin was a little surprised. "So fast?"
"I've studied for a year longer than you guys, and the beginning is pretty easy," Yan Heng said, handing his workbook to Tianxin. Tianxin put down her pen and began to check Yan Heng's homework. She couldn't help but admire how neat and well-presented it was. His handwriting was beautiful, and his problem-solving skills were clear. How could he be a poor student?
"Your handwriting is really nice. Did you practice from a young age?" Tianxin asked quietly.
"Uh, sort of," Yan Heng replied. If he said it was a gift, it might hurt his seatmate's feelings.
"Can your insomnia be cured? Have you seen a doctor?" Tianxin asked in a low voice.
"I've seen a doctor once, but there's nothing they can do. Sleeping pills don't work either, so I've given up," Yan Heng said. He felt that there was no difference between sleeping during the day and at night.
"Sleeping pills? Don't take those," Tianxin said. She didn't expect Yan Heng's insomnia to be so severe that even sleeping pills didn't work. Moreover, sleeping pills were not good things.
Yan Heng smiled faintly. "I won't. Don't worry," he said. He seemed to have remembered something, and a hint of melancholy flashed in his eyes.
