Chapter 2: Sold!

349 Words
The very next morning, she was roused from her sleep. "Wake up girl." She opened her eyes to see Edith looking at her in disgust. She got up, dusting some of the ashes. "Good morning cous-" she started. "Don't start that with me." said Edith. "Why are you here?" asked the girl, her eyes raw from crying. "I'm here to take you home." Her eyes flickered in surprise and she got up, wiping the tears off her face and following Edith. They walked across the yam fields and eventually arrived to the village square. She was thinking about how her fortune had changed. She would live with her aunt and have a shot of attaining a good life. Maybe they'd fix her marriage with a good boy and her life would be set. Maybe, after all these years, God existed. And just that thought made her smile and her heart leap. Until she was pushed It seemed as though everything was happening in slow motion. She had followed Edith into her own doom. Then she heard a laugh. Edith's laugh. "Do you honestly think we'd let a witch into our house?" laughed Edith. The girl's cheeks burned in embarrassment. "I..." Then she was kicked. "Did I ask you to speak?" She shook her head. "Good, until I tell you to speak you don't speak." She stayed silent, a teardrop falling on her cheek. How foolish could she have been? Why on Earth would these people- who treated her with scorn- suddenly have a change of heart? Next thing she knew, she was being dragged by her arm and tossed on a stage. She couldn't believe it. She was being sold. She recognized the place the moment she heard men laughing. This was where young girls were sold. She tried running when she felt two men hold her up. Anger bubbled inside of her, anger she never knew she possessed. Kicking one of the men, she ran, but did not get very far. The auctioneer stared at her menacingly. "Gentlemen, we have a feisty one on our hands." He said.
