As I walked through the school gate, a subtle shift in the atmosphere caught my attention, igniting my curiosity. The usual hustle and bustle seemed amplified, with more cars lining the driveway and an unexpected sight—a police car. Thoughts raced through my mind, wondering what could have prompted a police presence in our school. Intrigued, I pushed forward, maneuvering my way through the cluster of students, hoping to catch a glimpse of what was happening. Ascending the stairs, I opted for the elevator, eager to reach the source of the commotion. The hallway greeted me with a sea of faces, animated whispers floating through the air. It was evident that something significant was unfolding, drawing the attention of students who had gathered in various strategic positions. Thumbs slipped through the straps of my backpack, I moved closer to the epicenter, eager to unravel the mystery. As I continued my approach, the nature of the situation started to come into focus. There, amidst the flurry of activity, stood a man in a black pullover, deeply engrossed in the task of working on one of the lockers in th hallway. His intense focus was matched by the presence of his toolbox, neatly placed on the floor nearby. The hallway buzzed with speculation and whispers, each observer trying to make sense of the unfolding scene. I joined the ranks of those captivated by the enigma before me. Eager to unravel the truth, I strained to catch snippets of conversation, hoping for a clue to shed light on the man's presence and his purpose. The anticipation hung in the air, creating an atmosphere charged with intrigue and unanswered questions. Two men stood a few feet away from the focused individual, their presence unmistakable despite their lack of official uniforms. Their stern expressions and attentive gaze betrayed their status as officers. It was evident that they had a vested interest in whatever unfolded behind the closed doors of that particular locker. Questions flooded my mind as I observed the scene. Whose locker was it? Had something gone missing? Would they proceed to search the other lockers as well? Anticipation gripped me as I anxiously awaited the revelation of the locker's owner and the purpose of this investigation. The tension in the air grew palpable as the man successfully removed the locker door, allowing the two officers to step forward. One of them meticulously began extracting the contents from inside it, while the other closely examined each item. Their trained eyes and calculated movements hinted at a deliberate search for nothing specific. Curious, I approached a student nearby, "Do you know who the locker belongs to?" I inquired, receiving only a shrug in response. Undeterred, I nodded politely and moved away, determined to seek information elsewhere. Squinting my eyes, I focused on the pictures adorning the locker's door. They featured familiar faces—Keisha, Pauline, and the other girls from their squad. The locker definitely belonged to one of them. A mix of curiosity and concern washed over me. As all its contents were emptied onto the floor, a hushed anticipation filled the air. Suddenly, a resounding clap echoed through the hallway, drawing my attention to an unfamiliar teacher. Her vibrant stilettos matched the shade of her lips, adding a touch of elegance to her commanding presence. "Off to your classes! Right off to your various classes," she announced, prompting the scattered group of students to disperse in different directions. Following suit, I made my way to my first class. Upon entering the classroom, I immediately spotted Mark, comfortably seated in his usual spot next to mine. His face was buried in his folded arms, resembling a peaceful slumber. I gently tapped his shoulder to gain his attention. "Hey," I greeted, a smile dancing on my lips as his head shifted and he raised his gaze. Meeting his eyes, I couldn't help but recall the incident with Jason from the day before, causing my smile to fade into a more neutral expression. I settled into my seat, placing my backpack on the desk in front of me. The distant whispers of students, the gentle rustling of papers, and the subtle hums charged th air. "Hey," Mark responded, his back finding solace against the seat as a yawn escaped his lips. I couldn't help but notice the faint traces of sleepiness on his face, the slight puffiness beneath his eyes. My gaze shifted to the creases on his uniform sleeves, evidence of his earlier makeshift pillow. "Have you been sleeping?" I inquired, genuine concern lacing my voice. His nod confirmed my suspicion, and his fingers tapped absentmindedly on the table's surface. His eyes wandered around the classroom, a subtle shift in his demeanor. It felt as though he had withdrawn, as if there were unspoken thoughts lingering between us. I couldn't help but question the reason behind his change in behavior. You will always feel strange if a talkative stops talking. Could it be because of what transpired yesterday? Was he acting distant because of the encounter with Jason? My mind raced, searching for answers. Perhaps I was overthinking, letting my imagination run wild. I shook my head, trying to dismiss the swirling thoughts, focusing instead on retrieving the necessary texts for the upcoming class. Placing the books on the table, I carefully hung my backpack behind my chair. The classroom buzzed with a muted energy, students settling into their respective seats and preparing for the lesson ahead. I stole a quick glance at Mark, his features momentarily lost in contemplation. I adjusted my posture in the chair, releasing a soft sigh as I gathered the courage to address the events of yesterday. Leaning forward slightly, I began, "Um, about yesterday—changing plans abruptly like that must have seemed uncool, right? I didn't have any idea he was going to show up. I'll try to—" Interrupting me, Mark raised an eyebrow and wore a mischievous smirk, almost tempting a laugh to escape my lips. Ah, there it was—the familiar playfulness in his expressions. Was Mark starting to grow on me? It was hard to believe, considering we had only known each other for a short while. "Why are you telling me that?" "Huh?" I feigned confusion, even though I knew exactly what he meant. After all, I had just initiated the conversation. "Why do you feel the need to explain yourself? Did you think I'd be sulking because your 'boyfriend' picked you up?" he chuckled, his tone lighthearted. My eyes widened in surprise, my chuckle joining his. I shrugged, pretending to be clueless, as if the thought hadn't crossed my mind. Right, why was I explaining myself? "No?" I responded, shaking my head. It was true—I hadn't assumed he would react that way. "I was just being polite by apologizing for the change of plans, you know?" I clarified, my words tinged with a mix of relief and confusion. It seemed Mark was more relaxed about the situation than I had imagined. Why then did I feel bad thinking he would have been upset? He rolled his eyes playfully, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Ah, you're so 'cultured'," he remarked, causing me to chuckle softly as I tapped my pen on the books in front of me. "And he's not my boyfriend. I think I need to clear that up too," I added, feeling the need to clarify the nature of my relationship with Jason. "He's not? You two sure seemed like it..." Mark's voice trailed off, his words laced with curiosity. I shrugged, gesturing with my hand. "Well, it's... at least not yet," I responded, a hint of uncertainty in my tone. Why was I explaining myself so much? I scolded myself internally, wishing I could just let the matter rest. Mark nodded, a knowing smirk playing on his lips. "I see. It's a work in progress, like one of those things?" he teased, his words accompanied by a slight tilt of his head. I tilted my head slightly to the side, considering his words. "Kinda," I replied, the ambiguity of the situation lingering in my mind. Sometimes, I questioned the extent to which I was willing to go with Jason, considering my actions were only driven by a desire for getting back at Keisha. The anger I had once felt during my expulsion last year had subsided, yet here I was, pushing forward with my new plans. Perhaps it was a way to remind myself of the pain I had experienced and my longing for a chance to right the wrongs, even if I hadn't anticipated it would unfold in this manner. Despite the doubts, I still embraced the idea of pursuing my new path. After all, I had no concrete evidence regarding the real cause of the crash that led to my expulsion. But the fact that Keisha had falsely accused me despite knowing the truth cast her as the villain in my eyes. From my perspective, I was justified in teaching her a lesson she wouldn't soon forget. As I pondered the intricate web of emotions and motivations surrounding my actions, Mark nodded in understanding. The unspoken understanding between us was palpable, and I couldn't help but wonder what thoughts swirled in his mind. Did he see me as a weirdo? Perhaps, but it was a label I had grown accustomed to. I shifted my attention back to the classroom, the noise of students settling in drawing me out of my introspection. My eyes caught sight of Keisha, entering the classroom with a noticeable lack of energy. Her backpack dangled from her fingers as she made her way towards her seat, her demeanor a stark contrast to her usual vivacity. I couldn't help but wonder what was now transpiring between her and Jason these days. My gaze fixated on the bag Keisha carried, realizing it was different from the one I had seen the men retrieve from the locker earlier. The other girls from her squad were also present in the classroom, with the exception of one notable absence. A sense of anticipation filled the air as I turned to Mark, "Hey, do you have any idea why the police are in our school?" I inquired, my voice laced with curiosity and a hint of concern. Mark paused for a moment, his brows furrowing as he searched for an explanation. "I think someone went missing," he responded.
