UNSAID EXCHANGES

Tyresse was in the cafeteria. Headphones on. Music low. Seated alone like usual, untouched food beside him. Everything about him looked calm — controlled, distant, unreadable. Like nothing around him could reach him. Kai watched him from a distance. Just for a second longer than necessary. Then he walked forward. Gift bag in hand. He stopped in front of Tyresse’s table. Placed it down. “Take it.” Tyresse slowly lifted his gaze. Looked at Kai. No surprise. No curiosity. Just silence. Then he removed one earbud. And looked away. Kai frowned slightly. Leaning in just a bit. “Just take it.” Tyresse stood up. No reaction to the gift. No reaction to Kai. He pushed his chair back and turned to leave. Kai’s expression tightened. He moved fast. He ran after him. Steps quick. Almost careless. His foot caught the edge of a wet patch near the cafeteria exit. He slipped. Not fully falling — but enough to lose balance. Tyresse turned instantly. Caught him again. Same grip. Firm. Controlled. No hesitation. For a second, everything went quiet. Too quiet. Like the noise of the cafeteria disappeared for just that moment. Kai steadied himself slowly. Pulling his arm back. Trying to act normal again. But his breathing was slightly off. Tyresse looked at him. Then released him. No comment. No reaction. Just turned away again. Kai clicked his tongue. Annoyed. Confused. Frustrated for no clear reason. He stepped forward quickly. Grabbed Tyresse’s wrist. Tyresse stopped. Kai forced the gift bag into his hand. Harder this time. No words. Just action. Then Kai let go. And walked away immediately. Fast. He almost slipped again near the exit. Caught himself on a table. Stayed still for half a second. Then continued walking like nothing happened. Behind him, Tyresse stood still. Holding the gift bag. Watching him leave. Then he turned. And walked the opposite direction. The school was quieter now. Late afternoon. The sound of instruments and soft music coming from one of the practice rooms. Tyresse was there with his friends. Focused. Calm. Doing what he usually did — detached but present. Kai passed by outside with Marvis and Zayn. Talking. Laughing. Normal noise. But Kai slowed slightly. Just slightly. His eyes shifted. He looked through the practice room window. At Tyresse. Tyresse lifted his head at that exact moment. For a second.Their eyes almost met. Tyresse paused. Just for a fraction of a second. Like he felt something. Then he looked away. Continued what he was doing. Like nothing happened. Kai kept walking. But slower now. Then continued with his friends. The sky changed. Clouds darker than before. Air heavier. Kai said goodbye to Marvis and Zayn. Separated early. He walked alone. Hands in pockets. Thinking nothing specific. Or maybe too many things at once. Then— rain started. Sudden. Hard. Kai stopped. Looked up. Clicked his tongue. He rushed toward the nearest cover. Found a shaded building edge. Stopped there. Breathing slightly off from the run. Then— he bumped into someone. Tyresse. Both froze. Silence. Rain hitting the ground louder than anything else. Kai stepped back slightly. “…Sorry.” Tyresse didn’t respond immediately. Just looked at him. Then looked away. Both stood under the shade. Waiting. Neither moving. Neither speaking. Then— a loud thunder cracked across the sky. Kai flinched hard. Without thinking— he grabbed Tyresse. Not fully hugging. Just gripping him tightly for a second. Instinct. Fear. Tyresse stiffened slightly. Then held him. “It’s okay,” he said. Calm. Low. Kai slowly loosened his grip. Embarrassed now. Quiet. “…Sorry,” he muttered again. Tyresse didn’t respond. But he didn’t push him away either. Kai adjusted himself. Looked down. Trying to regain control of himself. Tyresse noticed. He pulled out a handkerchief. And gave it to him. Kai hesitated. Then took it. The rain wasn’t stopping. Not slowing. Just continuing endlessly. Tyresse looked at it. Then at Kai. He opened his umbrella. Grabbed Kai’s wrist. Not rough. Just firm enough. And walked. Kai followed. Quiet. No resistance. They moved through the rain together. Not speaking. Not looking at each other. Just walking. Until they stopped. Same apartment building. Kai blinked. Then looked at Tyresse. “…You live here?” Tyresse nodded slightly. No explanation. Kai looked away. “…Same.” A pause. “Thanks,” Kai said quietly. Tyresse didn’t respond. Just turned. And walked away. Kai sat on his bed. Quiet room. Rain still faint outside. He stared at nothing for a while. Then slowly smiled. Small. Almost confused. He turned on his side. Eyes closing slowly. Sleep came quietly. Tyresse sat alone. Music low. Umbrella resting nearby. He looked at nothing in particular. Still. Silent. Then closed his eyes.
