THE STAR BELONGS TO THE SKY

The campus felt different now. Not because anything had changed. But because everyone already knew. Kai and Tyresse didn’t need whispers anymore. They were the whisper. They were the attention. And neither of them was hiding now. Kai walked through the corridor first. Slow. Calm. Like he had stopped fighting the noise around him. Behind him, Tyresse followed. Not distant. Not separate. Just there. Always there. A student stepped aside too quickly. Another looked away. Some still stared. But no one said anything anymore. Because it was clear— they weren’t pretending. Marvis leaned against a wall as Kai passed. “…So it’s really like that now?” Kai glanced at him. Then smiled slightly. “Yeah.” Zayn added from behind him, “…You’re not scared of all this?” Kai paused. Looked back. And for a moment, his answer was honest. “I was.” A beat. Then he added, “Not anymore.” At the end of the corridor, Tyresse waited. He wasn’t checking his phone. Wasn’t distracted. Just waiting. For Kai. Always Kai. Kai walked up to him. “…You’re still doing that thing.” Tyresse tilted his head slightly. “What thing?” Kai nodded toward the space around them. “Like you’re guarding me from air itself.” Tyresse didn’t deny it. “I said I don’t like distance.” Kai gave a small breath of laughter. “…You’re impossible.” Tyresse replied calmly. “You like it.” That made Kai pause. Then he smiled properly this time. “…Yeah.” Later that day, a small event was held in the school courtyard. Students gathered. Noise. Movement. Normal life continuing. But something in the air had shifted permanently. Kai stood at the edge of the crowd. Tyresse beside him. A slight distance this time. Just enough to see clearly. But not enough to feel apart. Kai looked at him. “…Remember when this all started?” Tyresse nodded once. “Yes.” Kai exhaled. “…It feels far.” Tyresse corrected quietly. “It isn’t.” Kai looked forward again. Then said softly, “…I don’t think I ever want to go back to before this.” Tyresse’s voice lowered. “You won’t.” A group nearby started talking loudly. Pointing again. Still curious. Still watching. One of them laughed. “…They’re really stuck together now.” Kai heard it. Tyresse heard it too. Kai didn’t react. But Tyresse did. He stepped slightly closer. Not aggressive. Just instinct. Kai noticed immediately. “…You don’t even think anymore before doing that.” Tyresse looked at him. “I think about you.” Kai went quiet. Because that was the answer. Always. A sudden silence fell over part of the crowd. Someone had asked something. Too loud. Too direct. “Are they actually together like officially?” People waited. Curious. Expecting denial. Or awkwardness. Kai turned slightly toward Tyresse. Tyresse already knew what he was going to do. Kai stepped forward half a step. Then spoke clearly. “No.” A pause. People reacted. Before they could misunderstand— Kai added, “We’re not ‘together like that.’” Silence tightened. Then Kai looked at Tyresse. And finished, “We’re just not apart anymore.” That landed differently. No confusion. No guessing. Just truth. Tyresse didn’t correct him. He only looked at Kai. Like that answer was already enough. The crowd slowly dispersed. Noise returning. Life continuing. But something had ended and started at the same time. Kai and Tyresse walked away from it all. Side by side. Quiet again. Not hidden. Not performing. Just existing together. At the campus gate, Kai stopped. Tyresse did too. Kai looked at him. “…So this is it?” Tyresse nodded once. “This is it.” Kai smiled faintly. “…No more running?” Tyresse answered immediately. “No more running.” Kai exhaled slowly. Then said softly, “…Good.” A pause. Then Kai added, “…Because I don’t think I’d survive losing you now.” Tyresse didn’t hesitate. “You won’t lose me.” Kai looked at him for a long moment. Then stepped closer. Not rushed. Not uncertain. Just certain. “…Stay,” Kai said quietly. Tyresse nodded. “I’m here.” Kai smiled. “…I know.” And just like that— there was no dramatic ending. No separation. No twist. Just two people who stopped running from what they felt. Standing in the same place. Choosing it. Every single time. Because some connections don’t break. Some stories don’t end loudly. Some just continue. Quietly. Like a promise. Like a sky that never loses its star.
