Chapter 10

Jessica's POV Reluctantly, I stopped and turned to face Zander at the sound of his voice. He had already secured the contract. I wondered what he could possibly want from me now. Was he here to gloat? I looked at Zander questioningly as he walked toward me. There's a hint of helplessness in his eyes, reminiscent of the past when he had acted adorable. Those cherished memories were briefly conjured, causing a momentary lapse in my concentration. But I quickly snapped back to reality. I took half a step back and then said coldly, "Mr. Harrison, what can I do for you?" "All right, this job cost me so much money, you must be satisfied, right? Now can we sit down and have a peaceful meal together?" Zander's voice was deep and pleasant, the same gentle tone I had once missed so much. My gaze flickered past him and landed on Serena, who was walking towards us. My heart slowly cooled. I didn't understand why he was still involved with me after everything that had happened. "No need," I flatly refused. With that, I turned to leave. My position at Alpha is Project Manager, but there is still a General Manager, Frank, between me and my brother Alvin, the CEO. This was the suggestion of my father, Justin Riddle. If I were to directly take over as General Manager, I might miss out on a lot of grassroots experience. But now I have to explain to Frank why this order was not signed. "Is everyone in Alpha so rude?" Serena, who had caught up with Zander, muttered. When I heard this, I immediately turned to her. She was startled at first and looked at Zander anxiously. Seeing no reaction from him, she began to provoke, "What are you looking at? I don't work at Alpha. Are you going to fire me?" "A secretary who provides extra services for her boss in the office, I wouldn't dare to fire you." I said sarcastically, then took a step forward and whispered, "I know what you did that day..." This statement was a warning and a sign that I didn't want to continue such a boring talk. After I finished speaking, Zander frowned slightly. He seemed to want to say something, but finally remained silent. Serena's face, however, became panicked and nervous. She looked nervously at me, then at Zander. Suddenly, she rolled her eyes and pretended to faint in the lobby of Arthur's company. It was working time, and there weren't many people here. But Serena's fainting startled me, Zander, and everyone else. Security guards quickly approached. "Let's go to the medical room. I'll have someone take her there." "Wait." I frowned and stepped forward. I graduated from medical school, and I was one of the top students during my time at university. Even though I despised Serena, I couldn't just ignore her. "Jessica." I crouched down and reached for Serena when Zander called my name in a low voice. I looked up at him coldly and said, "What? Feeling bad for her?" Zander started to speak but I cut him off. "Don't worry, I'm just checking on her. I may not be a doctor, but I haven't forgotten the medical student's mission to save lives." I touched Serena's eyelids, which twitched unnaturally. Then I held her wrist and felt her pulse racing. I moved my fingers close to her nostrils and felt her labored breathing. It didn't look like a sudden faint at all. I smiled inwardly. Then I stood up and said to Zander, "Acute shock." I opened my pocket and took out a pen. I deliberately spoke out loud, "Fortunately, I always carry an emergency injection niddle, which I rarely have a chance to use. If someone who isn't in shock gets it, it could cause cardiac arrest." Zander looked at the pen in my hand and raised his eyebrows. He didn't expose me, just looked at me amusedly. As soon as I finished speaking, Serena immediately opened her eyes and got up from the floor. Then she saw the pen in my hand. "If you're not feeling well, take a rest. I'll give you five days of sick leave. Leave now," Zander said coldly. Serena shuddered, wanting to argue but not daring to. Finally she left dejectedly. After she disappeared, I put the pen back in my bag and prepared to leave. Zander's voice sounded beside me, a hint of a sigh in his tone, "I just remembered, you used to study clinical medicine, and you said your dream was to become a doctor." I was stunned for a moment. My dream had indeed been to become a doctor, and I had gotten a job at the hospital where I did my internship. But it was the year that I met Zander. To marry him, I gave up my dream. It was a risky decision, but I lost. I laughed mockingly at myself. I turned to Zander and said, "Yes, I've been married to you for so many years that I almost forgot that my dream was to be a doctor. But it's not too late. I'm going to be myself from now on." With that, I didn't stop and left directly. Back in the car, I closed the door, shutting out all the noise from the outside. Suddenly the phone rang. It was from my biological father, Justin. I let out a small sigh and hit the answer button.
