“Samantha…w-, what are you doing here?” I sputtered, shocked and confused at seeing her there.
“I-, Audrey invited me. She came over to the house, saying she had some event to attend but no one to go with.” Sam said, her eyes looking glassy as they darted between me and Anika.

“Xander, darling, who is this?” Anika said, appearing by my side. She curled her hand possessively around my bicep and leaned into me, smiling sweetly.
“Darling?” Samantha whispered, her voice cracking as she looked up at me.
“Samantha, this isn’t what it looks-” I started, attempting to explain.
“Xander, aren’t you going to introduce me to your friend? Or are you trying to keep us a secret?” Anika said, then laughed airily at her own sick little joke.
