“And she said and I quote 'Darnell is so full of himself. So he expects me to jump on my feet and scream yes! Simply because he mentioned
the island? Tell Darnell we need to talk, else I'm not stepping my feet there.' that's exactly how she said it.” Elvis narrated, trying to mimic Kiesha's voice.
“First off, Kiesha doesn't sound like that and I'm really disappointed that you can't defend me behind my back,” I turned around, heading into the house, not sparing him another look.
“Darnell common... So you angry now? Man wait for me, you can just go and see her, you both can sort this out...” Elvis was calling after me, but i didn't care to listen.
My room smelled fresh as though it had just been cleaned. The curtains were clipped in the middle to let in sunlight. The bed was neatly dressed with three pillows on it. My white robe was hung in the closet. All I had to do was unpack my stuff. But I didn't have the motivation to do that right now, I needed to take my mind off Kiesha and swimming was going to help.
I had some of my swimming gear packed in the closet, changing into a short and grabbing my towel. I headed out to the side of the house where the pool was.
I had spent just a few minutes at the pool when my phone beeped with a text from my dad. “They are here son, where are you?” The message read. I knew he was referring to no other person than his bride. Finally, we get to meet Mrs Maria and her daughter, especially her daughter.
Chapter Six
Fiona 's Pov
“Oh my goodness! Fiona can you see this?” Dianna screamed beside me, as we drove into what was supposed to be Louis's island mansion.
“Ma, I think you just hit a jackpot. Mr Louis is so rich,” she went on blabbing.
I plugged in my earphones, needing to disconnect my self from all of her noise. Actually, the view from the entrance of the Island has been really impressive. But I wasn't expecting less either, it is Goose Island we're talking about, it was only normal to get such delicious view. I don't expect Dianna to understand that, when all she does is follow my mum around.
“Louis is a God sent, my dear.” My mum answered.
I turned on all the volume of my music to shut them out completely. I was tired of hearing the praises they sang of Mr Louis. He couldn't be different from all the other men and I'm sure my mum would realize that soon enough.
I sighed almost regretting my decision of coming here. They had made me promise and I couldn't go back on my word. Now we're here, I just pray for the strength to be able to keep my cool for the next one month. I might just as well run out of my mind with the stupid law that was made by my mum and her man. How am I suppose to stay off any work related stuff for the next one month? What then would I be doing with my life?
I turned off the car engine when we got to the front of the house. Dianna was the first to step out. A man came forward, dressed in a white sleeved shirt and a waist coat, a matching pant and well polished shoes. He held the door for my mum and offered to do the same for me.
“You know I could just step back in, so you could hold the door for me too, I love men that do that,” Dianna joked, but nobody laughed. Not even the man, though there was a stretch on his lips, I didn't consider it a smile. Served her right, she would learn to shut her big mouth.
“Just show me where to park my car,” I told the man, still sitting on my seat.
“The valet would do that ma'am,” the man bowed, flashing a warm smile. “You can just hand me the keys,” he stretched out his hands.
“I would love to do it myself, it's my car, I do not want anyone manhandling her,” I insisted.
“Ermm... ma'am, Sir Louis asked that we take care of your needs as soon as you arrive. He won't be happy to know that we let you do the parking yourself.” The man stuttered.
“That's nonsense. We're not handicaps, we can definitely manage. Moreover, Louis is not here watching you right now, his he?” I raised my brow.
The man glanced towards my mum, seeking for her intervention. My mum stepped forward in a not so gentle manner to speak to me from the open window. “Step down Fiona , we just got here and it's too early to start with your dramas,” she spoke through clenched teeth.
“But Ma...”
“Just do as I say, Fiona !” She commanded, smiling assuringly at the man in a way that said she had handled the issue, she stepped back to her former position.
The man stepped forward again, waiting for the key. I pulled it out of the keyhole slowly, taking my time. If he wanted it so badly, then he wouldn't mind waiting. I jingled the key in my hand playfully, stretched it out to him, and just when he was going to take it, i withdrew my hands, smiling at my own wickedness.
“Fiona !” My mum yelled.
“ugggh!” I threw the key at the man, it clattered to the floor and when he was about to pick it, I opened the car door knocking him off to the ground.
“My goodness!” Dianna screamed, rushing forward to save the man.
“Oh Lord!” My mum followed suit.
“Jezzz!” I giggled, as I stepped out of the car. My mum threw a stone hard look at me, so i covered my mouth, preventing more giggles.
The two were trying to get him off the floor. But he managed up smoothly by himself. Dianna was helping to dust his coat. My mum stepped in apologizing for my rude behavior.
“Fiona apologies to the young man,” she thundered in her most angry voice, which doesn't really sound like a thunder. It sounded tiny, more like a ermm..m never mind.
I didn't want to argue, so in my most sarcastic voice I said, “I am sincerely sorry that you got in my way just when I was about to step out and got knocked off by my car door. It won't happen again, I promise. Friends?” I stretched forth my hands.
Even if he hated my guts, he knew better than displaying it before his bosses new family. So he took my hand in a firm shake and then released it quickly. “Friends,” he muttered without a smile.
“Am Fiona ,” I offered.
“Bear,” he answered.
“It is nice meeting you Bear... Wait Bear? Like the actual Bear? Your parents named you Bear?” i was astonished and couldn't hide it.
He smiled a little before saying, “I named myself that. My baptismal name is Vincent.”
“Oh, okay. I think I like Bear. BEAR,” I roared the name playfully. He smiled widely this time. I guess that was me making up for my bad behavior earlier on.
“This way ma'am,” he led the way into the house.
Dianna wouldn't stop screaming “Oh my goodness,” if her goodness was a person, he or she would have been tired of hearing their name being screamed by now. She pointed at the large framed paintings on the wall, which i wouldn't deny were beautiful. She was amazed by the staircase that was built in a Y shape. Each branch leading to a different part of the house.
She was dazed by the size and aesthetic of the chandelier. I was too, but not like her. Following behind Bear, we ascended the Y staircase. At the junction where the both branches were connected, we met Louis and a young man.
“Louis, you have a very lovely place here,” my mum greeted.
“Thank you. How was your trip?” He greeted back.
“It was amazing, especially the landmark around the island. Thank you for doing this,” she smiled at him.
They said all of this standing opposite each other, not shaking, not hugging, not even kissing as new couples would do. There was no lovey-dovey thing like I had expected and it seemed strange, maybe weird too. I thought this was supposed to be a honeymoon between two just wedded people?.
“I would take the tour from here, Bear. You can go bring in their baggages and tell Nance to fix something nice for lunch.” He directed Bear, who bowed and descended the stairs.
I caught Dianna making faces with the young man that stood beside Louis. He smiled nicely back at her. Was Dianna flirting with my step-brother already? He was well dressed in a suit material, had a good haircut, and was generally mannered in appearance. If he was Louis son, then thank goodness gracious, because he looked like someone I could tolerate.
“Don't you think it would be lovely to introduce me to my step-brother, Louis?” I called his attention.
“Fiona , he isn't...” My mum was about to say.
“Don't worry, let me do the introduction. Pardon my manners Fiona , this is Elvis,” the gentleman bowed slightly with a smile. “He is my son's best friend. They've been friends since childhood and now Elvis is more like a part of this family. He also works at the Glams as an editor.” Louis introduced.
I was disappointed. If this wasn't his son, then where the hell was he? How come we've never met? Not even at the wedding? Was he a ghost? Or maybe he had a disability that made him hide from normal humans? What else could be the reason for his absence? I was suppose to have met him before now, at least to know if I could accept him as family, as a step-brother.
“And your golden son? Why haven't we met him?” I questioned.
