Chapter 15

Cain's Pov I returned to where the camp was set up after riding for a while, we had come up far South, we would be crossing into darkwood territory soon. “Alpha,” the mind link buzzed “Jax.” “The team is thinking of hunting. It's been a while since we last hunted.” He wasn't entirely wrong, I had been so focused on getting my hand on Theron's princess that I forgot one of the things that still kept us sane — Hunting. “Your thirst for blood is stronger than mine.” Kale snickered from where he lay deep in my mind, “And somehow I'm the bloodthirsty beast between us.” “What happened to the silent treatment?” I sneered, “You talk too much for a brooding wolf.” He snarled, “Watch it human. Carrying a grudge will do neither of us any good, I've let go, you should too.” “And what are you going to do? Crawl up from under the hole you crawled into when it mattered? Do me a favour Kale, f**k off.” I growled and shut him out pulling up our walls. Cracking my neck I sped off into the distance, my blood burned for blood and the thrill it carried. Parking I strode into the woods, “Over here” Jax waved as I approached. “Thanks for the heads up.” I smiled, “Anytime Prez” he offered a tight smile. “Hello to you too” Mika’s voice was laced with sarcasm. “Thanks. What are we hunting?” “Anything, Stan made mention of this woods being the unpredictable one, the one with nearly all its wild life extinct.” I nodded, “We'll find something, I can sense it in the air.” “I know, but we don't know exactly what it will be, so let's make it a simple hunting game,” her lips curled upwards. “The first to kill?” Jax suggested. “That was the last one we did, only because we were dealing with boars.” Stan shook his head. “Don't be too fast,” Mika smacked them both at the same time, “First to fill their beast and return with meat.” I ran my tongue over my upper lips, this was indeed different, while it was now a tradition for us to hunt, chipping in the games and bets was only to make things fun. “What's the catch?” I asked, She smirked, “Looser gets to scout scarleria,” mischief flashed through her eyes. “Brutal” Jax mummered. “Woah” Stanley exhaled, Their faces lit up with competition, this was a challenge they craved, I looked at them tiredly, “I don't mind scouting Scarleria” I shrugged, “it's just a small park that thinks it can contend with me.” “You're not part of the bargain, the last time you did you returned with twice as much hatred than what they had before.” Mika scoffed. “Yeah, this game is to decide who among the three of us and the rest of the crew would scout this time around, the park is the only bridge towards the south and north. I doubt they'd let us pass peacefully, not to mention if Theron has reached out to them, this must be discreet, and….” “No offence Prez, but you're anything but discreet” Stanley cut Jax off, they glared at me. I shrugged, “suit yourselves, and like I said, it wasn't my fault they had weak defenses and even dared show off before me, they had it coming.” “Yeah right” they chorused. “I've already mind linked every one hunting with us, the game is officially on Alpha, see you on the other side.” Jax announced, leaping into the air he was replaced by brown furs, the rest followed suit, all assembling before us different eyes fixed on me. My bones restructured, I changed giving Kale partial control, don't ask how or why, but I'd be damned before I give that backstabber full control of my body. With a loud howl the hunt officially started, I sprinted into the forest, letting it guide me, paws bounced from every angle of the forest, as if sensing our presence birds chirped and flapped, all escaping. It wasn't a full moon but the moon cast it light on the dark forest nonetheless, letting the predator in me out. Soon the scent of blood filled the forest, bones snapped, teeth crunched, my teeth dripped blood as I dragged the dead bear that thought it wise to sneak up on me. We reconvened at the entrance of the wood, I dumped its body which was carried away by the soldiers. “Who’s our scout?” “Gabriel” It was Jax that replied. “Okay” I nodded, “fair enough, the kid is weak.” “When will you stop ignoring her?” Mika asked from nowhere. I ignored it watching as Kale licked the blood off our fur, he had been silent since our last encounter, which was good. At least for me. “He's letting things simmer between them. Read the lines” Jax chuckled. “More like he's running.” Mika chuckled, “Never thought I'd see the day this happens” I glared at them, “I'm not running” I mind linked, “You both should get a job. They continued as if they couldn't hear a word I said, “how long do you think he can run for?” Jax pressed on. “Not very long, she's already crawling under his skin.” she replied, her lips curling with amusement. “Shut up. You're both unbelievable.” I growled. They finally turn to me, “You can't fear nor ignore her forever.” “I'm not afraid of her,” I snapped. “No, you're afraid of losing control, it's slipping past your fingertips especially the more you spend time around her, you're running.” Mika exhale “I'm out of here” I sprinted into the distance before they could continue with their analysis. My chest suddenly tightened, my breathing became strangled, sweat pouring from our furs. Kale came to a halt, his body turning towards the camp ears, perking higher than usual. Just then a heart wrenching scream filled the air sending something ugly down my spine. I know that voice. “Aria”
