Chapter Ten — The Prophecy

The fire had almost burned out when Marcus finished speaking. Daniel stared at him. “The red-eyed wolf is alive?” Marcus nodded. “He has been sleeping beneath the northern mountains for generations.” Elena stood. “How could he wake up?” Marcus looked at her. “Because someone awakened him.” Daniel's expression hardened. “Who?” Marcus hesitated. “Our father.” Silence filled the clearing. Daniel shook his head. “Why would he do that?” “Because he wanted more power.” Marcus looked toward the mountains. “He believed the ancient wolf would help him unite every werewolf pack.” Amara frowned. “And what happened?” Marcus gave a bitter smile. “He was wrong.” The wind suddenly became cold. Daniel felt something moving inside his chest. The silver pendant Lydia had given him began glowing faintly. He pulled it from beneath his shirt. “What is happening?” Marcus stared at it. “That pendant belonged to your mother.” “I know.” “No.” Marcus stepped closer. “You don't understand. Your mother wasn't an ordinary werewolf.” Daniel's eyes widened. “What are you saying?” “She was a guardian.” Daniel stared at him. “A guardian of what?” “The prophecy.” Amara looked confused. “What prophecy?” Marcus turned toward her. “The prophecy says that one day, a human woman will be chosen by a werewolf from the Blackwood bloodline.” Daniel looked at Amara. Marcus continued. “When the bond is completed, the human will become the key to either peace or destruction.” Amara's heart raced. “You're saying I'm part of some prophecy?” “Yes.” Daniel shook his head. “No. I don't believe it.” Marcus looked at him. “You don't have to believe it. Your father does.” A distant howl echoed. Marcus's face became serious. “The red-eyed wolf knows about the prophecy too.” Amara stepped closer to Daniel. “What does he want from me?” Marcus answered quietly. “Your blood.” Daniel immediately pulled Amara behind him. “Why?” “Because your blood can awaken the ancient power.” Daniel looked at Marcus. “And if he gets it?” Marcus's eyes darkened. “He becomes unstoppable.” Amara felt fear creeping into her heart. “Then what do we do?” Marcus looked at Daniel. “You must find the place where the first bond was created.” “Where?” “The Moon Temple.” Daniel frowned. “I thought it was a legend.” “So did everyone.” Marcus turned toward the mountains. “Until the red-eyed wolf awakened.” Daniel tightened his grip around Amara's hand. “We're going.” Marcus nodded. “I knew you would.” Elena looked at Marcus. “And you?” Marcus looked toward the direction of the pack. “I have unfinished business with my father.” Daniel understood. “You're going back?” “Yes.” “Why?” Marcus looked at his younger brother. “Because someone needs to stop him.” Before leaving, Marcus looked at Amara. “Protect Daniel.” Amara nodded. Marcus smiled faintly. “And Daniel?” “Yes?” “Protect her better than you protected Elena.” Daniel's expression fell. Marcus disappeared into the forest. Amara looked at Daniel. “Who was Elena to you?” Daniel sighed. “Someone I failed to protect.” Amara squeezed his hand. “You won't fail again.” Daniel looked at her. “I promise.” Above them, the moon disappeared behind thick clouds. And deep beneath the mountains, something opened its eyes. Red eyes.
