Chapter Eleven — The Moon Temple

They traveled for two days. The mountains became steeper with every mile. Daniel moved easily across the rough terrain, but Amara struggled. “You could have warned me that your secret supernatural world involved mountain climbing.” Daniel smiled. “You didn't have to come.” She glared at him. “Don't start.” He laughed. “You're impossible.” “And you're annoying.” Daniel stopped. “What?” Amara nearly walked into him. “What?” He pointed ahead. Through the trees stood enormous stone pillars. Covered in moss. Ancient symbols were carved into them. Amara stared. “What is this place?” “The Moon Temple.” They stepped forward. The entrance was hidden beneath thick vines. Daniel pushed them aside. Inside, the air was freezing. Amara noticed paintings covering the walls. Werewolves. Humans. And a strange creature with red eyes. She walked closer. “Is that him?” Daniel nodded. “The red-eyed wolf.” The painting showed the creature standing above hundreds of wolves. Beneath it was a human woman holding a silver object. Amara recognized it. “The pendant.” Daniel looked at his chest. His mother's pendant began glowing. Suddenly, the temple shook. Dust fell from the ceiling. Daniel grabbed Amara. “Stay close.” A voice echoed through the temple. “The blood has returned.” Amara froze. “Did you hear that?” “Yes.” The voice came again. “The chosen one has entered the temple.” Daniel looked around. “Who are you?” No answer. Instead, a hidden door opened. Behind it was a circular chamber. In the center stood a stone altar. On the altar was an ancient book. Daniel approached. Amara followed. The book opened by itself. Pages turned rapidly. Then stopped. A sentence appeared. When the moon chooses love, the ancient curse shall awaken. Daniel looked at Amara. “What does that mean?” She shook her head. Another line appeared. The wolf shall choose between blood and love. Daniel whispered: “My family.” A third line appeared. The human shall choose between life and sacrifice. Amara stepped backward. “What does that mean?” Daniel closed the book. “We need to leave.” A deep growl came from behind them. Daniel turned. A massive shadow stood at the entrance. Red eyes glowed in the darkness. Amara couldn't breathe. The creature stepped forward. Daniel transformed. The two wolves faced each other. The red-eyed wolf smiled. “You have your mother's eyes.” Daniel froze. The creature spoke again. “Your father was foolish to awaken me.” Daniel growled. “What do you want?” “Her.” He looked at Amara. “She carries what belongs to me.” Daniel stood between them. “You will never touch her.” The creature laughed. “You still believe love can save you.” Then it disappeared. The temple fell silent. Amara rushed toward Daniel. “Are you okay?” He transformed back. “Yes.” But he was trembling. “Daniel?” He looked at her. “That thing knew my mother.” “Then maybe she knew how to stop him.” Daniel stared at the ancient book. “Maybe.” Suddenly, another inscription appeared on the altar. Daniel read it aloud. Find the woman beneath the black moon. Amara frowned. “Who is that?” Daniel didn't know. But he had a feeling they were running out of time.
