Chapter Three — The Full Moon

437 Words
Three nights later, Amara discovered that Daniel had been telling the truth. She had wanted proof. She got more than she expected. The full moon rose above the forest, enormous and silver. Daniel had taken her deep into the woods. “You still have time to leave,” he said. Amara shook her head. “I've already chosen.” “You don't know what you're choosing.” “I know that I trust you.” Daniel looked away. “No one should trust a monster.” “You're not a monster.” He laughed bitterly. “You've never seen what I become.” “Then let me.” Daniel closed his eyes. The transformation began. His body shook violently. His hands changed first. His fingers stretched. His nails became claws. Amara's breathing stopped. Daniel fell to his knees. His bones shifted beneath his skin. His shoulders widened. Dark fur spread across his body. His face changed. Within seconds, the man she knew was gone. A massive black wolf stood before her. But the eyes were the same. Golden. Sad. Human. Amara slowly stepped forward. The wolf growled. She stopped. “Daniel?” The wolf lowered its head. Amara reached out. Her hand touched his fur. The growling stopped. He closed his eyes. She smiled. “You're still you.” The wolf looked at her. Then suddenly, a howl came from far away. Daniel's ears rose. His entire body became tense. Amara looked around. “What is it?” Daniel transformed back. He grabbed her hand. “We have to go.” “Why?” “Because they found us.” “Who?” He looked toward the darkness. “My pack.” Amara's blood ran cold. “Your pack?” Daniel nodded. “They believe humans should never know we exist.” “And because I know?” “They will kill you.” A branch snapped behind them. Daniel pushed Amara behind him. Three pairs of golden eyes appeared between the trees. Then a voice emerged from the darkness. “Daniel.” A tall man stepped into the moonlight. His eyes were gold. His clothes were black. He smiled. “You were warned.” Daniel stood protectively in front of Amara. “I won't let you touch her.” The stranger laughed. “You still don't understand, little brother.” Daniel froze. “Marcus?” The man smiled. “Our father wants you home.” Daniel's expression hardened. “I will never return.” Marcus looked at Amara. “Then she dies.” Daniel growled. Amara realized something terrifying. The real danger had only just begun.
