Chapter Nine — The Escape

638 Words
The pack mansion stood beyond the northern mountains. It was enormous. Ancient stone walls surrounded it, and tall black gates guarded the entrance. Amara had never seen anything like it. Daniel walked beside her. His hands were tied with silver chains. Elena was beside them. The Alpha walked ahead. “Welcome home,” he said. Daniel didn't answer. Inside the mansion, dozens of werewolves watched them. Some looked curious. Others looked hostile. Amara felt their eyes following her. A young wolf whispered: “The human.” Another replied: “She is his mate.” Daniel heard them. His jaw tightened. They were taken to separate rooms. Amara was locked inside a bedroom. She tried the door. Locked. She looked through the window. Too high. Then she heard a knock. Three soft taps. She froze. Another three taps. Amara recognized the pattern. “Daniel?” No answer. She moved toward the wall. A hidden panel opened. Daniel appeared. Amara smiled. “You escaped?” “Not yet.” He stepped inside. “Then what are you doing here?” “Getting you out.” “What about Elena?” “She is already outside.” Amara stared at him. “How?” “Lydia helped us.” Amara smiled. “I knew there was a reason I liked that woman.” Daniel laughed quietly. “We have five minutes.” “Until what?” “My father realizes we're gone.” They hurried through the hidden passage. The tunnel led beneath the mansion. Elena waited at the end. “Finally.” Daniel smiled. “Ready?” Elena nodded. They stepped outside. But the moment they reached the forest, a howl echoed behind them. Daniel stopped. His face changed. “What's wrong?” “My father knows.” They ran. Behind them, dozens of wolves poured from the mansion. Amara stumbled. Daniel caught her. “Keep running!” They reached a river. The bridge ahead was broken. Elena looked back. “They're coming!” Daniel stared at the river. Then at Amara. “Can you swim?” Amara shook her head. “Not well.” “Then hold onto me.” Daniel grabbed her. He jumped. The freezing water swallowed them. Amara clung to him as the current pulled them downstream. Above them, wolves appeared on the riverbank. The Alpha stood among them. “DANIEL!” Daniel looked back. His father's voice echoed through the valley. “You cannot run forever!” Daniel held Amara tighter. “We don't have to.” The river carried them into darkness. Hours later, Amara opened her eyes. She was lying beside a fire. Daniel sat nearby. Elena was sleeping against a tree. Amara slowly sat up. “You saved us.” Daniel smiled. “We saved each other.” She reached for his hand. He took it. For a moment, everything was peaceful. Then Elena suddenly woke. “Daniel.” He looked at her. “What?” She stared toward the forest. “There is someone here.” Daniel stood. His eyes became golden. “Who?” Elena whispered: “I don't know.” A figure stepped from the trees. Amara recognized him immediately. Marcus. Daniel's brother. He stood alone. No guards. No weapons. Daniel growled. “Why are you here?” Marcus looked at him. “I came to warn you.” “About what?” Marcus glanced at Amara. Then his voice became quiet. “Our father isn't the greatest danger anymore.” Daniel frowned. “What are you talking about?” Marcus took a step forward. “The red-eyed wolf.” Daniel's expression changed. “What?” Marcus looked toward the dark forest. “He has awakened.” A distant howl echoed through the mountains. Daniel's face went pale. “That can't be.” Marcus nodded. “He's alive.”
