Daniel barely spoke as they walked.
Amara could feel the tension in his body.
“Who is Elena?”
He continued walking.
“Daniel.”
“She was my friend.”
“Only your friend?”
He stopped.
Amara immediately regretted the question.
“She was important to me.”
“How important?”
Daniel looked at her.
“She was the first person who helped me escape my family.”
Amara's expression softened.
“What happened to her?”
“She was captured.”
“By your father?”
“Yes.”
“Because of you?”
Daniel nodded.
Amara stepped closer.
“Then we have to save her.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“My father wants me to return.”
“And if you don't?”
“He'll kill Elena.”
“Then we'll rescue her.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You shouldn't be involved.”
Amara crossed her arms.
“I'm already involved.”
He smiled despite himself.
“You're stubborn.”
“And you're impossible.”
For the first time that morning, Daniel laughed.
They continued walking.
By evening, they reached an abandoned village.
Daniel stopped outside an old stone building.
“She is here.”
Amara looked around.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
They entered through a broken door.
The building was dark.
A faint voice came from downstairs.
“Daniel?”
He froze.
“Elena.”
He rushed down the stairs.
Amara followed.
A young woman was chained to a wooden chair.
Her face was bruised.
Daniel immediately ran toward her.
“Elena!”
She smiled weakly.
“You came.”
Daniel knelt beside her.
“I told you I would.”
Elena looked past him.
Then she saw Amara.
Her expression changed.
“Who's she?”
Daniel hesitated.
“My mate.”
Silence.
Elena stared at him.
“Your mate?”
Daniel nodded.
Elena looked at Amara.
Then she smiled sadly.
“She's beautiful.”
Amara didn't know what to say.
Daniel broke the chains.
“We need to go.”
Elena stood.
But before they could move, the doors slammed shut.
A deep voice filled the room.
“Leaving so soon?”
Daniel turned.
His father stepped from the shadows.
The Alpha.
Two guards stood behind him.
Daniel's eyes turned golden.
“Let them go.”
His father smiled.
“You came back.”
“I came for Elena.”
“You always were predictable.”
Daniel moved forward.
“Release them.”
The Alpha looked at Amara.
“You chose a human.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she loves me.”
His father laughed.
“Humans don't love monsters.”
Amara stepped forward.
“I do.”
The Alpha looked surprised.
“You understand what he is?”
“Yes.”
“And you still choose him?”
“Yes.”
The Alpha's smile disappeared.
“Then perhaps you deserve to die with him.”
Daniel transformed instantly.
The room erupted into chaos.
The guards attacked.
Daniel fought them.
Elena grabbed Amara's hand.
“Stay behind me.”
“You're injured.”
“I've survived worse.”
Suddenly, the Alpha grabbed Amara.
Daniel turned.
“LET HER GO!”
The Alpha held Amara by the throat.
“Come closer and she dies.”
Daniel froze.
His father smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Amara struggled.
“Daniel…”
The Alpha looked at his son.
“You will return to the pack.”
Daniel's fists trembled.
“And if I refuse?”
The Alpha tightened his grip.
“Then she dies.”
Daniel looked at Amara.
Then at Elena.
He knew he had lost.
“Fine.”
The Alpha smiled.
“Good.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I'll return.”
Amara stared at him.
“Daniel, no.”
He looked at her.
“Trust me.”
The Alpha released her.
Daniel walked toward his father.
But before he reached him, Amara noticed something.
Daniel was smiling.
A tiny smile.
Almost invisible.
She suddenly understood.
He wasn't surrendering.
He had a plan.
