They returned to the forest before sunset.
Daniel was unusually quiet.
Amara watched him.
“You're thinking about your mother.”
“Yes.”
“What happened to her?”
“I don't know the whole story.”
“Your father never told you?”
“No.”
Daniel looked toward the mountains.
“He said she died.”
Amara took his hand.
“Maybe she didn't.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Why would you say that?”
“Because the red-eyed wolf knew her.”
He thought about it.
“You may be right.”
A branch snapped behind them.
Daniel immediately turned.
“Who's there?”
No answer.
He transformed.
Amara stepped back.
A figure emerged from the trees.
Elena.
Daniel relaxed.
“Elena.”
She smiled.
“I found you.”
Amara noticed something strange.
Elena wasn't alone.
Two wolves stepped from behind her.
Daniel growled.
“What is this?”
Elena's smile disappeared.
“I'm sorry.”
Daniel froze.
“Elena?”
She looked away.
“They have my sister.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“Who?”
“My sister was taken by the Alpha.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I knew you'd come back.”
Amara stared at Elena.
“You betrayed us.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't have a choice.”
Daniel looked at her.
“There is always a choice.”
Elena shook her head.
“You don't understand.”
The two wolves attacked.
Daniel fought them.
Amara ran.
One wolf chased her.
She tripped.
The wolf lunged.
Daniel appeared between them.
He knocked the wolf away.
“RUN!”
Amara grabbed a branch and struck the wolf.
The creature stumbled.
Daniel attacked the second wolf.
Elena stood frozen.
“Daniel!”
He looked at her.
“Get out of here!”
She shook her head.
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because I'm sorry.”
Daniel turned back.
The first wolf attacked again.
Elena suddenly stepped forward and stabbed it with a silver blade.
The wolf collapsed.
Daniel stared at her.
Elena dropped the knife.
“I told you I didn't have a choice.”
Daniel nodded.
“I believe you.”
The remaining wolf fled.
Amara approached Elena.
“You could have gotten us killed.”
“I know.”
“Why should we trust you?”
Elena looked at her.
“You shouldn't.”
She turned toward Daniel.
“But I can help you.”
“How?”
“I know where the Alpha is taking your father.”
Daniel froze.
“My father?”
Elena nodded.
“He discovered something.”
“What?”
“The Alpha knows where the Moon Temple is.”
Daniel's face darkened.
“And he knows about the prophecy.”
Amara looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?”
Elena answered.
“He plans to use you.”
Amara's heart sank.
“For what?”
“To awaken the ancient wolf completely.”
Daniel clenched his fists.
“We have to stop him.”
Elena nodded.
“There is one problem.”
“What?”
“The Alpha already has Marcus.”
Daniel went silent.
His brother was a prisoner.
His father had the temple.
The red-eyed wolf was awakening.
And Amara was the key.
Daniel looked at her.
“I won't let them take you.”
Amara stepped closer.
“Then don't.”
She took his hand.
“Let's end this.”
Far away, beneath the mountains, the red-eyed wolf opened his mouth.
A terrifying howl shook the entire forest.
The final stage had begun.
