A New Dawn

399 Words
A year had passed since Aria and Luca left behind the shadows of their former lives. Now in Bueno Aires, they had built something real and something theirs. The apartment was modest, decorated with secondhand furniture and mismatched curtains but it was full of laughter and light. Morning coffee had become their ritual, stolen kisses and quiet moments watching the sunrise their peace. Luca had traded bloodstained hands for soil-covered ones, working at the vineyard outside the city. The simplicity of tending vines, growing something with his own hands, gave him a sense of calm he'd never know before. He no longer carried a gun but a pair of gardening shears and wore work boots instead of designer shoes. Aria, once consumed by her hunt for teeth, now stood in front of eager students as a journalism lecturer. She had published her first book under a psuedouym a celled account of the events that had led her to flee Italy. The book had found quiet success and in its pages she had bled out the pain and keep the love. One rainy afternoon, a letter arrived. No names,no stamp, only a few words written in Enzo's hand. "The Romano name has faded. You're both free. Live." It was both closure and blessing. Luca read it once, said nothing and burned it in the fireplace. Then came Gianna. Bursting in from the rain, arms open and loud as over. She'd found them through Aria's book. There were bugs and tears and a friendship rekindled. Gianna stayed for weeks, laughing and cooking then asking every questions she wasn't allowed to before. One evening, under the glow of fairy lights on their small terrace, Luca knelt before Aria with a simple ring. His voice trembled as he said, "You saved me,Aria Moretti. Marry me." Her answer was a kiss followed by a dance under the stars, barefoot and smilling. Five years ago, their vineyard flourished. A little girl with curly black hair and her mother's stubborn smile ran between the vines. Isabella was the heart of their world. Aria, now pregnant again, sat on the porch finishing her second novel, watching her family through eyes full of peace. Luca joined her,his hands rough but his touch gentle. He kissed her forehead and whispered thanks for the life she gave him,for the man she allowed him to become. Their past was a shadow they had outrun. What remained was light. A new dawn, full of hope.
