It’s a raw and cold afternoon and we are all gathered in the brainstorming room—this meeting is exclusively for the team’s script writers. The four of us gathered with the Directors and the Producers of the film. I am notably enraptured and nervous about this whole meeting.
I’m having a cold sweat as I went in and sit on one of the empty chairs. The place is an isolated space with a marker board for coming up with great ideas. It is clean and tidy and the space can also double as the company’s small meeting room. It really looks like an intimidating room but most of the great and excellent ideas were created here.
“All of us here, right?” Ms. Layla began by asking. We nodded our heads because the way I see it we have a small people for the screenwriting unit. “Without further to do let’s get started by knowing if all of you read, scan or browse the pages of what will be this year’s great project, right?” We nodded again.
Ms. Layla Toussaint is our division’s director. She will be providing us the guidance in creative vision for this whole production. The way I see things is that the meeting that is ongoing today is the way to hear our ideas, opinions and suggestions regarding about the movie. The story line of the movie is in our hands. She is also a very important person in the entire creative process—she is the one who will exert great influence all over the crew. Her job is also to hear our insights and make sure to get everybody’s thoughts because it will affect the whole process and the result. She is the pillar and we are the supporters and the others who will be on her back.
The room grew colder and the silence grew thicker than earlier. I think she observed something and decided to speak up. “We will start for a few minutes—so that we can exchange greetings as well us introduced ourselves from one another.” We smiled because of the embarrassment and how we look in her eyes. We can’t help but to be awkward to each other.
Newbies like us can’t help it so much not like our seniors who have a carefree and casual talk with the other people. I am a person who can’t create a conversation not unless the person who made the first move is really talkative and jolly. I can make friends whenever I have and the condition is said to be if they will be the one who will move first.
Christine did exactly as what I describe about what I like when making friends. My problem is that I am socially awkward but not too much. I can adapt to new things or person easily just in the way that they are easily to get on their flow.
On the other hand, I didn’t expect Ms. Layla to be that kind because the media didn’t gave her justice. She is most likely the talk of the town earlier with the guys. They said or describe her aura to be intimidating, rugged or snob, but someone jumped in their conversation and defend her a bit. He said that she is seen to be like that mostly on the behind the scenes of a project. They told her that she is strict but has a kind heart, which I agreed.
He also made a statement about her. He said that she can be like that because she wants the project’s product be great because she knows how much blood, sweat and tears all people put into that movie and she can’t afford it to be wasted because of someone or her mistakes and errors.
She introduced to us very simple just like her appearance is. She is graceful and well-mannered lady with a pure heart. She seemingly cold outside but her heart, and eyes can tell that she is a great leader and a director and she can guide the crew perfectly. Little did she know that I know her from one of her movies and became a little fan because of how well made the story is. I want to be like her but I think I should start from the bottom to reach the top.
I looked around and realized that most of the people here in the room are veteran and our seniors in the industry. I felt that I have no right to invade their conversations but then I accidentally locked eyes with one of them and suddenly introduced himself to me. “Hey there fella! We are being rude! I am Kevin Lee.”
Oh shoot! I am not ready for this; I even think that my hands are sweaty. Luckily, Tine introduced herself first and she is also much nearer to her. It’s embarrassing for me and for him if no one will accept his hand for a shake hands.
“Hi! I’m sorry!” I awkwardly laughed. “I’m January Ashton, Nice meeting you all!” I continued. They all looked at me and smiled. I hope they can understand what I am feeling right now.
“Oh! Just call me Kevin or Mr. K!” he said and I nod my head. I actually learned from the list of the employees that he is the producer of this team.
It’s really an honor for us both to meet the above the line members. I always keep the phrase in my mind because that’s how powerful their positions influenced me at the same time. People might not know that screenwriters and them should be working together.
Wow! They’re so cool with their titles, I thought. I am in a hot plate just right now but it was cooled down with their welcoming greetings. They are such a kind people, that the media sometimes can’t capture.
“Hi! I’m Alice Leroy, call me queen alice, just kidding!” she said giggling at her own joke. (Leroy means King anyways that makes it fun.) “My goodness, Alice!” A beautiful lady exclaimed looking so done with her joke.
“What?” she asked acting innocently.
“Stop with your dry jokes! It’s not really funny!” she complained.
“So? What?” she rolled her eyes and delightfully sit in her chair.
The lady sighed as she looked at her seat mate but then shift her eyes on me. She has such a beautiful green eyes that stares at my soul. I even thought that she was an actress not until she introduced herself. “Hi I’m Sheila!” She offers her hands for a hand shake and I gladly took and shook it gently. She is the 1st assistant director of the division and not an actress. “You’re so beautiful!” I unconsciously complimented her. She blushed at my compliment, that made my worries away. I am worried that it is weird or whatever, but she just thanked me.
“Yeah cause that’s her surname!” Alice chipped in with a serious look in her face and Sheila says nothing about it and just rolled her eyes out.
“You know what?” she takes a deep breath and continued. “Stop with your jokes or else!” she threatened her. They are like tom and jerry and they both have a teenage soul in their body and I am fascinated about it.
“But did I lie?” she asked her.
“No.” Sheila sighed and end up giving up arguing with the lady. Ms. Alice has a short blonde hair with a dark blue eyes but it was not noticeable because of her black squared glasses.
When it comes to clothing senses, I can see their personas on it. Ms. Alice loves accessories and clothes that are colorful while Ms. Sheila likes simple and minimalist looking suits but comfortable to wear and for Mr. Kevin, I think he loves black and white as he wears one in a formal suit style. I love the way they bond and how I could tell their liking when it comes to fashion but I can be wrong.
As I recall and said last time, we have 4 scriptwriters in our precious team. Mrs. Julia Rousseau and Ms. Lucy Auclair are the two senior scriptwriters and a dependable writer and the two is us. Our main roles where now put in when they told us earlier after they introduce are mainly what a script writer should do.
We just find out today that all the Script writers that passed the interview will not go on with the title of intern, but as regular scrip writers. We will be now dealing how to create dialogues and storyline for the film. Fortunately, the senior writers finalized the characters and that being said, Tine and I will be working to the next level—which is the story line.
“So…” Ms. Julia begin. “We are going to discussed about how the story will flow and the story line.” She continued as she went on the front. We are all become aware and listened to her.
“As you can see in the paper, pages 2 to 3, are the summary or where you can see the theme of the movie, and genre.” She discussed and we all turn our pages and see that it is very clear and organized.
“The film is all about A girl named Francine Monet keeps on having a nightmares and then one night as she falls asleep, she dreamed of something different from what she dreamed from the past few years. Its full of colors, shining brightly in her eyes. She noticed the magic of the dream and went on its flow. While she explores the town in her dream she surprisingly met a young man. She didn’t approach him until she was woken up. Since that day, she never felt excited about sleeping, and never give herself any hope that she will sleep and wake on the same dream, but exactly that time of her thinking she was exactly on the spot where she left in her dream. This time she gained some courage and went to the lonely boy, sitting on the bench. As they chat and meet in her dreams something happened and made her realized that the boy she falls in love with is not real. She took her time and finally confessed that they are not real but then the boy…er…what’s his name again?” She was interrupted by her own as she forgotten the boy’s name.
“Uhm…Louis—Louis Archambeau!” Mr. Lee said.
“Alright!” she nodded and continue, “Louise responded differently, he holds her chin as he lifts it up and kissed her on her lips and told her that he will wait for her here in where they met until she falls asleep.” She finally finished reading the plot. It looks like an angst coming of age film. I love how it is being said, and it’s being told not that thorough and makes you want to decipher the story, but then we should start making it first.
“What are your thoughts, suggestions, comments and opinions about the snippet of the story?” she asked us, trying to catch some eyes in the room.
Ms. Alice raised her hand, and said, “I think we should give plot twist?”
“Well, we will consider it.” She answered as she pointed in our direction. We, means writes will give it a shot or consider it.
Mr. Kevin raised his too and asked, “I think we should not have one set or place in her dreams and also in her real life, but how?”
“Alright! Francine’s life is crazy and a bit out of justice but then the place where she can escape in her nasty, and horrible life is by dreaming. She is in denial while Louis on the other hand is someone who seems can’t escape the place he is.”
We all nodded as she spoke, discuss and elaborate more on what’s on her mind. Time passed by as we all in to the film, and happily include us in the discussion. It’s golden hour when the meeting dismissed.
