Chapter Eight

670 Words
Ann sat in her sunporch watching the sky.  The news was calling for snow flurries.  The skies were clear and gray.  No clouds at all.  Everything seemed to be sitting still.  All the leaves had fallen off the trees over the past few days.  Fall had not lasted long at all.  An early winter was moving in. She felt the winter of her life creeping in a little more each day. It had been awhile since she had seen a good snow.  Maybe this year she would see snow like she did growing up.  One of her favorite memories was hearing Betty and Ellen yelling for her to wake up because it was snowing.  That winter had been fun.  They had played in the snow making a snowman, throwing snowballs, and making snow angels.  It was also the first Christmas Ann remembered.  Great Uncle Phil had brought a tree home for them to decorate. Ann would hand everyone the decorations to be put on the tree.  When they had gotten to the bottom of the tree where Ann could reach, they let her put the decorations on the tree.  She enjoyed decorating the tree.  There were Christmas songs, Church, and a big Christmas Dinner.  She remembered getting Christmas presents and Great Uncle Phil showing her how all the toys worked.  She remembered being so happy.  She made her way to the kitchen table setting her coffee cup down.  She picked up her pictures and saw the picture of her and Great Aunt Flora standing in the snow.  Ann was trying to ride her tricycle in the snow.   As she set the pictures down, she saw Betty's wedding picture.  Betty and Ellen had started spending less and less time at home and then she was told Betty was getting married.  Ann was going to get to be her flower girl.  It was all very exciting.  She was dressed up like Cinderella.  Betty had been so beautiful that day.  Everyone was so happy.  People were blowing their car horns on their way to the reception.  Ann wondered how long the fun would last.  She did not understand that Betty would be going away and that soon after Ellen would move as well. Once Betty and Ellen were gone, Ann was so lonely.  Little did she know that something big would be happening soon. Great Aunt Flora and Great Uncle Phil would soon have a surprise for everyone. Ann started putting the two scrapbook pages together. She wanted to have them ready for Davey when he got there.  Today was special.  On Sundays Katelyn and Landon came with him.  She could not wait to see everyone. She remembered the scrapbook items Davey brought for her to put together showing her first meeting of Landon.  She put the picture and embellishments on the page.  The feeling of meeting him for the first time was so overwhelming it was hard to put in words.  She was thinking about that feeling when she thought of a quote she had read when Davey was born.  The wonder of a miracle from which this love began. There is so much found in the touch of holding a grandchild's hand. - Unknown. She looked at the picture of them in the rocking chair, him holding her thumb and the quote seemed to sum it up this time as well.  She typed out the quote and added it to the page.  She held it up looking at it and was pleased.  She added it to her book. She quickly tidied up the house before Davey and his family arrived.  There was the doorbell.  She went to answer the door.  There was their smiling faces and her beautiful great grandson.  She could not wait to hold him. She immediately went to her seat so she could cuddle with her little one.  He was so precious. He was cooing with every word she said.  She looked at him realizing that her life had led to this moment and it was a happy one.  One she would not change for anything.
