Chapter 11 Midnight Confession

608 Words
After Mia vanished into the dark corridor, the royal chamber fell into quiet stillness. The residual shadow magic lingered faintly in the air, but the tension between Layla and Ronan was softer now, no longer sharp with hatred and distrust. Ronan stood unsteadily behind her, the black curse veins still faint across his forearm. The temporary lunar suppression kept the poison at bay, but his body still trembled from exhaustion. “You should rest.” Layla spoke first, her tone calm, no longer cold and hostile like before. “The curse will flare again if you overexert yourself.” Ronan did not return to the bed. He took one slow step forward, closing the small distance between them. The moonlight slanted through the window, gilding his sharp facial features, softening the cold edge of the ruthless Alpha. “I want to talk.” His voice was low, sincere, without any royal arrogance. “I owe you the truth.” Layla turned to face him, her silver eyes quiet. Ronan lowered his gaze, the weight of years of loneliness finally spilling out. “I was not born cruel.” He breathed out slowly. “When I was young, my father was killed by a Silverthorn wolf betrayal. Since then, I was taught that all half-bloods are untrustworthy, that kindness is weakness for an Alpha king.” “That’s why you believed Mia so easily?” Layla asked quietly. “Part of it.” Ronan nodded in pain. “The other part is the mate bond. From the moment the blood moon marked you, I was terrified. I never wanted a fated mate to control my life, yet my soul craved you uncontrollably. That confusion made me irritable, blind, and easy to manipulate.” He raised his eyes, golden gaze filled with raw regret. “I locked you in the dungeon not only because of the evidence. I was afraid. Afraid that if I softened toward you, the curse would use my weakness to kill me faster… and drag you down with me.” Layla’s heart stirred faintly. She had always thought his cruelty came from indifference, but now she understood—it came from fear, loneliness, and the heavy burden of a throne he had carried since childhood. “I hated you,” she admitted honestly. “I hated your judgment, your coldness, the way you locked me away without listening. But when I felt your life fading through the bond… I could not let you die.” The mate bond between them hummed warmly, the sharp pain completely fading away, replaced by gentle, tangled longing. Ronan reached out carefully, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear, his touch tender and reverent. “I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you, Layla.” He whispered. “Whether you forgive me tomorrow, or years later… I will wait. I will protect you from Mia, from the curse, from everything that hurts you.” Layla did not pull away this time. She looked into his sincere golden eyes, and for the first time since they met under the blood moon, the wall between hatred and forgiveness began to c***k. “For now,” she said softly, “we focus on stopping the final blood moon. After that… we will talk.” A faint, relieved smile tugged at Ronan’s lips. Outside the window, the crescent moon hung low in the sky. The war against Mia was still coming. The deadly crimson full moon was approaching. But tonight, between the cursed Alpha and the exiled Moon Maiden, the ice between their broken hearts finally began to melt.
