Peter finished his half of the circuit around
the cabin before Tom returned. Back where they'd started, he leaned
against a tree and watched the building. It sat in quiet darkness
in the woods, the dim light shining from half-curtained windows a
false promise of warmth and comfort within. Cathy and Danny were in
there, no more than a hundred yards from where he stood, as
inaccessible as though it were the other side of the globe.
He'd managed to get a quick glance in the top
half of one of the windows, a brief look being all he could risk.
Danny and Cathy sat at the other end of the long room, talking to
each other. Despite the peril of their situation, Peter's spirits
