Chapter 16 – Heat in the Shadows The night was heavy with silence. The kind of silence that hummed with tension, like something was waiting to happen. Rain tapped against the windows as lightning lit up the sky in short, electric flashes. Damian stood by the fireplace in his room, staring into the flames. He hadn’t spoken in minutes—not since he came back from another tense meeting with his men. Something had gone wrong. Eliza could feel it in the way he moved, the way his shoulders stayed tense, his jaw tight. She watched him from the doorway, hesitant to interrupt his thoughts. But after everything they’d shared, she couldn’t stand on the sidelines anymore. “You’re shutting down again,” she said softly, stepping inside. “Talk to me.” Damian didn’t look at her at first. His eyes stayed on the fire. “There was an ambush tonight. One of our trucks. It wasn’t random.” Eliza felt the air grow colder despite the fire. “You think someone close betrayed you?” He turned finally, and his eyes landed on her like a weight. “I don’t think. I know.” She stepped closer, placing a hand gently on his arm. “So what happens now?” Damian studied her for a long time, then, suddenly, the ice in his expression cracked. “I need to stop pretending I can keep you out of this.” Before she could answer, he pulled her closer. His hands were warm on her waist, but the look in his eyes was conflicted—half fear, half hunger. She didn’t flinch when he leaned in. She didn’t pull back when his lips found hers in a slow, burning kiss. Instead, she leaned in too, kissing him deeper, more certain than ever that whatever storm was outside, it didn’t matter as long as he was here. Damian’s touch turned desperate. He picked her up and carried her to the bed without breaking the kiss, laying her down like she was the only thing grounding him to this world. Rain pounded harder against the glass, but all Eliza could hear was his breath, his heartbeat, his name on her lips. They moved together like they were chasing something only the other could give—comfort, clarity, control. Damian kissed her with a hunger that spoke of the nights he had gone without peace, without warmth. And Eliza held him like she’d never let go. Wrapped in each other’s arms, the world faded into the background. There was only firelight and thunder, hands and hearts, the tension of fear and love blending into something fierce and unforgettable. And when it was over, they stayed tangled in the quiet, Damian’s arm holding her close against his chest, his lips brushing her temple. “I can’t lose you, Eliza,” he whispered. “You won’t,” she murmured back. “I’m not going anywhere.”
