Six Bright, diffuse light filtered through the screens that protected the interior of the little Japanese house. Amber opened her eyes and stared at those screens for a long moment, recalling where she was, how she had gotten here. Idris had found her and given her a safe place to stay. Idris. How crazy was it that she’d sat down and shared a meal with him — a meal that wouldn’t have been out of place at some of the fancier restaurants she’d patronized back when the world had moved blindly onward, oblivious to the fate hanging over it. Never in a million years had she thought that a djinn could be so courteous…so, well, kind. Then again, she hadn’t even known djinn were an actual thing, so there was that, too. It was strange to remind herself she didn’t have to cower underground anymor
