Some little corner of his mind—one much smaller and more remote than he ever would have imagined—was fiercely aroused. The idea of two women naturally exploring each other’s innocent flesh was enough to set him hard at any time. The thought that it had been his own two ladies perhaps should have been even more wildly exciting. But right now he felt only dread. Was this some mere dalliance for Janet? he wondered. Or, the terrible thought continued itself in his queasy mind, was she one of those people who weren’t really heterosexual but, uncertain of what they really were, still married young and confused as a matter of course? Suddenly he felt cold and alone. Had their whole marriage been a sham? Had she been unsatisfied with him for twenty-five years? Had she cringed at his every touch,
