“I have to leave on time tonight—Janet’ll kill me if I’m late for our anniversary dinner.”
Alan McGinnis grinned as he recalled his parting words upon leaving the law office that Friday afternoon, seeing in his mind’s eye the knowing winks and polite nods his fellow lawyers had given him. “Make sure you’re, ah, up to the task,” Winston had advised him.
“Prepare your briefs adequately,” Alice had smiled from behind her old-fashioned spectacles.
