Chapter Two Very early on Saturday morning Alan woke up to go to the bathroom, then, eyes still closed, shuffled back to bed and fell in contentedly, knowing that blissful hours of sleep lay ahead. Snuggled up against the sleeping body of his wife, belly against the soft, rounded flesh of her silk-clad bottom, he dreamed wildly… Alan strolled across the familiar sidewalk and lawns of the university campus on a sunny summer day, azure sky arching clear and cloudless above him. The leaves of the ancient oaks towering above rustled softly in the breeze. Chickadees and sparrows twittered across the sun-warmed grass, while three black squirrels chased each other down the hill to the garden by the brown-bricked music building. Up ahead the clock tower rang the quarter, brassy and melodious.
