Chapter Four It was strange at first, learning to live with someone else in the house. Soon, however, Alan fell into a comfortable routine. Younger than he or Janet, Melissa apparently needed less sleep, and she always rose first in the mornings, and by the time Alan had groaned out of bed, a delicious breakfast was cooking fragrant and warm, in the kitchen—toast, waffles, pancakes, perhaps eggs or sausages. Sometimes Melissa mixed the couple an unusual salad or presented fruit or some other interesting dish she had discovered in her wide anthropological studies. The woman’s talents seemed endless.
