"Caryn hurry!" Reese took all the clothes from the wooden closet on the right side of the wood-paneled room and stuffed them into the suitcase. Pale face dimming, his sea-blue eyes twitched as he gazed outside the glass window. The creaking of the forest trees outside the house and the howl of the wind sent shivers on his insides. "We need to get out of here as fast as we can!"
"I don't understand," Caryn said. "I thought you said we were safe here." She paced around the bedroom towards the wooden crib and carefully grabbed a baby wrapped in a white cloth. She faced her husband, brows furrowed and hands slightly trembling while holding the baby who is now starting to cry from waking up.
Reese turned to Caryn after closing the suitcase, his face stern and serious. "Not anymore," he said. "They already knew about you and the child. It'll be a matter of minutes before they find us here."
"How?" Caryn asked.
"I have no idea," Reese replied. He gazed outside the window again before turning to his wife. "Do you have everything you need?"
Before Caryn could answer, something very heavy landed on the roof, causing a loud bang and slightly shaking the house. Then there were footsteps on the roof. Reese and Caryn stared at each other. Both of them knew what it was.
"They're here." Reese pulled the suitcase from the bed and grabbed Caryn's arm.
They quickly stepped into a tiny wooden door across the bed that leads into a small kitchen. Reese immediately locked the door. The footsteps on the roof grew louder and closer. Then there was a defeaning scretch. It was so loud that the baby on Caryn's arms cried. The woman tried to shush him to sleep but the baby just cried louder.
"Here!" Reese opened a secret door in the kitchen floor that leads to a secret passage. "Quickly!"
Caryn wasted no time and stepped down into the basement. Reese was about to follow just as the glass windows shattered and splinters covered the wooden floor.
"Go!" he said. "Get out of here now!"
"I am not leaving you!" Caryn said from below.
"Time is wasting," Reese replied. "I'll do my best to keep them here. Now save Reivhen! Go!"
Caryn pulled his hand and pressed it. Reese touched the cheek of his wife and stared at her face. "Whatever happens, the child must live."
Reese pushed her down and immediately shut the basement door and sealed it. He got up just as three dark human silhouettes formed inside the room. Slowly, their appearances grew clearer. Two of them wore black leather jackets covering black shirts underneath. The third man in the middle wore a long black hooded trenchcoat and was taller and thicker than other two behind him.
The middle man lowered down his hood, revealing a pale face, sunken cheekbones, straight slicked-back long hair and a dangerous pair of fiery blue eyes. An evil smirk slowly formed in his pale lips.
"Lucian," Reese said as if he tasted citrus peel.
"Reese, my brother" the man replied. The smirk on his face grew wider. "It must have been a long day for you. You look exhausted."
"I'm in no mood for your small talk Lucian," Reese said. He met the gaze of his brother as he tried to think of different possible escape routes, contemplating on his chances to escape. "Why are you here?"
Lucian took one step closer to him. "I think you already know the answer to that question, brother." He turned to the corner cabinet above the countertop where a set of picture frames sit silently beside a potted Devil's Ivy. The largest of the frames contains a picture of a smiling one-year old boy in a husky-patched jacket. Lucian took the frame and traced the baby's face in the photograph. "Where is the child?"
"You'll never get your hands on Reivhen," Reese said, voice full and firm.
"Ah, Reivhen. So that's his name." Lucian placed the frame back in the cabinet. "No doubt a wonderful little boy. It saddens me that I cannot let him live. Tell me where he is and I will spare the woman's life. Or maybe yours too besides the fact that you my dear brother. . . had betrayed your own kind."
Reese clenched his fist. His eyes drifted to Lucian's men who snarled at him, showing sets of deadly fangs. Their claws appeared, ready to pounce and kill. He took two slow step backwards into the sink.
"Like I said, you will never get your hands on my son!" Faster than a bullet, he grabbed the knives behind him and threw them into Lucian's men. The blades pierced their foreheads, catching them off guard and sent them in panic of removing the blades.
Reese punched Lucian in the face but the latter caught his arm even before it could reach his face. He twisted Reese's arm causing a loud scream to escape from Reese's mouth. Lucian lifted him in the air and threw him into the other side of the kitchen where he hit the dish racks.
Reese recovered from the fall quickly and stood up. He removed the broken pieces of glass that went all over his body. His claws appeared on his hands and he bared his teeth, showing his fangs. "You will never succeed!"
"You know you're no match against me," Lucian said. He zipped like a dark mist infront of Reese and yanked him then threw him towards the ceiling. Reese fell on the ground hard. He crawled on the floor as Lucian's shoes appeared infront of his face. He grabbed the back of Reese's shirt and raised his head so they could see each other eye to eye.
"Where is the child?" he asked.
"I'm gonna have to die first before I tell you!" Reese yelled.
Enraged, Lucian slammed Reese's face on the wooden floor. Reese had broken his nose on the impact and shot his lips. A drop of blood escaped on the lacerate that formed on his forehead and his nose bled. Lucian gripped on his brother's shirt again and leaned on him closer. "I am not a very patient person Reese! Where is the child?"
"Screw you," Reese whispered.
Lucian slammed his face again on the floor. This time, he did it thrice. Reese endured all the pain, not minding if his brother slam him to death. His family should live. Reivhen should live.
"I had enough," Lucian said and grabbed Reese upwards so he could stand up. Reese tried to head-butt his brother but Lucian is way stronger than he is. Losing patience, Lucian bit him in the neck. All the memories from Reese head flashed like a fast-forward video record on Lucian's conciousness. Every single second, every single moment of Reese life appeared. Reese tried to fight back the energy but Lucian's bite was like poison, weakening him and absorbing his conciousness until he began to decapitate.
Lucian dropped him dead on the floor.
"The woman is in the train station," Lucian said to his vampire men after acquiring information from Reese's head. The two men had managed to remove the knives on their heads and had fully regenerated. Lucian wiped the blood off his lips and glanced down at his dead brother. "Find her. Bring me the child and dispose this mess!"
One of the men grabbed the gas from the stove and dropped it on Reese's body. The three vampires teleported into the woods just as the entire house exploded.
Caryn held the baby tighter as she took the trails of the underground train tracks. She had been running for minutes along the dark and damp place and Reivhen's crying had been echoing along the halls. She feared that his voice will eventually draw the vampires to their location. She continued running, holding the baby tight to her chest until she saw a faint light ahead. She must be near Gutherby Station. If she could get there immediately, the vampires will not be able to harm her as they do not usually attack on crowded places. Her scent will also fade and mix in the pack of humans. She needed to get there fast.
She came into an abrupt stop when she heard rustling not far from behind her. The sound seemed like metal and aluminum being smash by a crane. The back of her neck suddenly felt icy and goosebumps appeared on her skin.
They're here. They've smelled me
Caryn ran as fast as she could to get into Gutherby Station. If the vampires catch her, it will be over. Both for her and her son.
The tracks led into a curve and the light ahead grew brighter. She can already hear people chattering not far away. The rustling behind her is also getting close. Caryn took one quick glance behind her and saw two dark shadows following her. She quickly accelerated her running and took the final curve of the tracks leading her right into the night trips of Gutherby Station. She concealed herself among the passengers and entered the train that is about to leave.
"Excuse me, excuse me," she said as she fought her way along the passengers of the train which is the second train trip of the night. She found an empty seat beside a lady wearing a nurse's uniform who is asleep. Caryn took the seat just as she noticed the two men who entered the train. One of them is a blond guy with several gold piercing evident on his left ear. The other was dark haired and leaner than the blond one. But both of them had fierce deep blue eyes.
Oh my God. . .
Caryn lowered down her head. She knew the vampires can still smell her here. She took off her necklace with a big letter V pendant and placed in into the baby's wrap. She gave him one quick kiss and a sad smile. "I will come back to you. And if I can't. . . then. . .God will take care of you."
The baby had miraculously stopped crying the moment Caryn placed the pendant on his wrap. He giggled and stared innocently at his mother. But Caryn needed to leave.
With a heavy heart of leaving her son, she ran out of the train just as it is about to leave. The vampires noticed her and followed her outside. She took the stairs upwards into the open road. Caryn ran fast to get away but the vampires followed her nonetheless. She came into a dark alley with nowhere else to go. It was a dead-end. She turned around to look for other place to escape but the two tall dark creatures appeared in front of her.
A loud, deafening shriek echoed in the dark alley.
