Chapter 5

"What the hell?" I cursed under my breath and hit the steering wheel. Great! Now I'm stuck in the road in the middle of a dark street with a dead lamppost near the sidewalk. Cool! Really cool! I am a very fortunate being. I took out my phone and used it as a flashlight. I need to check out the engine if something is wrong, probably got some loose wire or something. I got this car two years ago and it's been acting very odd lately. Maybe it's time I get a mechanic to have it checked just to be sure. I opened the door and decided to step out but then I noticed a human sillhoutte standing infront of the car a few meters away. A snowflake melted on the back of my neck. Dark, hooded cape; stick criss-crossed on the back; cold and dangerous presence. If I am not mistaken, this was the very same person I saw outside Olivia's place. With a calm demeanor, I stepped outside the car. And the moment I did that, I had goosebumps, my heartbeat quickened and my knees buckled. I wasn't feeling very brave right now dear reader, but I can't show it to someone who clearly is up for something detrimental. "Who's there?" I asked, trying really hard to sound tough. The person in front of me didn't respond. He remained standing there like a human statue. "I'm in no mood for something crazy tonight if that's what you're up to," I said. "And it's June. You're a long way from Halloween." When I didn't get an answer, I decided to turn around back to the car. I didn't want to do anything with whatever this guy wants to do with his life. But before I could do that, I heard something unsheating, like a sword. An icy gust of wind zipped past my back. I hurriedly turned back to the man and my face contorted. He was gone. I walked towards where he was standing and looked around. There was nothing but the dead lamppost, an abondoned Tudor house, an empty street and my car. The person was not around. He was. . .truly gone like he was never there at all. Then I saw something on the ground, something spiky. I knelt on the ground and touched the glistening white spikes. They feel cold and glassy smooth—ice. These are ice spikes like stalagmites on an Antarctic cave. They looked like a wash-out wave, like a frozen water splash. What's even weirder is that there's ice on the road when in fact it's June? And winter is a long way to go? The ice trail also looked fresh. Like someone had just put them there. It created a trail towards west of me and is slowly starting to melt. Klank! My attention shifted into the abondoned Tudor house on my left. Something seemed to be rampaging inside as metals and glass shattered from the inside. I could clearly hear the clanging of falling and breaking things. The ice trail led into the gate of the house and disappears in the lawn. I tried to see clearer but it was too dark. My phone's light is not enough for me to see clearer. I stiffened when I felt the same cold sensation again, making me stare into the house. I found myself stepping into the lawn. Something was drawing me inside. Something was like pulling me into that dark, abondoned house entangled by overgrown vines. Tire scretched behind me making me turn back to the road. A black car had stopped near mine and the window slowly lowered. "Pete?" a blond guy peered from the driver's seat. I stepped back into the cement and stared at the newcomer. It was Luke, one of my closest friends. Seated beside him on the shotgun seat was his girlfriend Giselle who gave me a wave. "What are you doing in there?" Luke asked, probably wondering why I was checking out an abondoned building. "Oh well, it's my car. It's giving me headaches again," I said. "And I think I saw someone inside." I pointed with my thumb on the house behind me. "Do you want a ride?" Luke asked. "Giselle and I are on our way home." "No, I'm fine." I smiled. "I can't left this one out here. Might get towed and mom's gonna kill me if that happens. I think I'll just gonna give it another shot." "Still scared of your mom, huh?" He grinned. I shrugged, a smile forming on my lips. "You know how she is when she's mad." "Okay then," Luke said and stared at my car parked to their right. "If you don't get it fixed just call me. I'll pick you up." "Thanks." Luke and Giselle drove away, leaving me alone again. I stared back into the house. The falling and breaking sounds were gone. The wind grew humid and the place looked dead silent. I heaved a breath. Maybe I was just imagining things. I jingled my car keys from my pocket and got into the car. I inserted the key into the keyhole and puffed air. "Come on baby, don't be mean." I twisted the key and the car came to life. Lights turned on and the engine roared to existence. I exhaled in delight. Finally. I hit the transmission and the car moved out of that not-so-wonderful place that's giving me chills. I got home very late and my mom was waiting for me right at the porch. Our house was a simple suburban home with a small garage and a front lawn. I was expecting my mom to start yelling at me even before I could get out of the car but she just grabbed me into a hug and showered me with a hundred I was very worried about yous. When I got inside the house, I felt relieved. I had this feeling that someone was following me when I was driving yet there was no vehicle behind me at all. Sometimes my senses are way too overpowering that I am feeling things that wasn't there in the first place. I should probably get some rest. This was probably a result of what happened in the city center. I felt extremely tired that I immediately dozed off to sleep. *****
