For a moment, time forgot how to move.
The morning sunlight filtered through the frangipani leaves and fell in soft patches around them as tears gathered in her eyes. The world beyond the garden disappeared, leaving only two hearts standing in the middle of a promise neither of them would ever forget.
He remained on one knee, his hand slightly trembling as he held out the ring.
Every beat of his heart echoed louder than the birds chirping in the distance.
She looked at him, then at the ring, and back at him again.
A smile slowly spread across her face.
It wasn't hesitant.
It wasn't uncertain.
It was the kind of smile that came from years of friendship, countless late-night conversations, shared dreams, silly arguments, unexpected adventures, and a love that had quietly become home.
Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.
He gave a nervous laugh.
"I was hoping you'd cry happy tears."
She laughed through her tears.
"I am."
He swallowed.
"So..."
She nodded before he could finish.
"Yes."
His eyes widened.
"...Really?"
She laughed again, covering her mouth as another tear escaped.
"Yes."
He blinked.
"I don't think my heart heard that properly."
Shaking her head, she stepped closer until they were only inches apart.
She gently placed her hands on his face.
"My love..."
Her voice trembled with happiness.
"Yes. I'll marry you."
The words settled over them like the sweetest melody.
He let out a breath he didn't even realize he had been holding.
A grin broke across his face.
"You have no idea how terrified I was."
She giggled.
"I know."
"No, seriously. I rehearsed this proposal in the mirror."
"You did?"
"For weeks."
She burst into laughter.
"You practiced talking to a mirror?"
"The mirror said yes every single time."
She laughed so hard she had to wipe away fresh tears.
"I can't believe I fell in love with someone this ridiculous."
"And yet..."
He lifted the ring with a playful smile.
"...you still said yes."
"I did."
Carefully, he took her left hand.
His fingers shook just enough for her to notice.
She squeezed his hand reassuringly.
"You've got this."
"I suddenly forgot how rings work."
She laughed.
"Just breathe."
Taking one slow breath, he gently slipped the ring onto her finger.
It fit perfectly.
Neither of them spoke.
She stared at the sparkling diamond catching the morning sun.
He stared at her.
Then they both laughed at the exact same time.
He stood and wrapped his arms around her.
She melted into the embrace, holding him as tightly as she could.
"I love you," he whispered.
"I love you too."
"No..."
He smiled against her hair.
"I mean... I really, really love you."
She looked up at him with a grin.
"I know."
He kissed her forehead.
Then her cheek.
Then finally, softly, her lips.
The kiss was gentle, filled with relief more than excitement — a promise rather than a performance.
Before they could pull away —
"I KNEW IT!"
The shout echoed across the garden.
Both of them jumped apart in surprise.
Dara — her best friend since secondary school — burst out from behind a row of flowers, clapping so hard she nearly dropped her phone.
Right behind her came Femi, Tobi's cousin and best man-in-waiting, laughing loudly.
"I told you she'd say yes!" he shouted triumphantly.
"You also said he'd forget the ring in his pocket," Dara teased.
"I was emotionally preparing for every possibility!"
The newly engaged couple couldn't stop laughing.
Within seconds, more friends emerged from every hiding place imaginable.
Someone released a shower of white and gold confetti into the morning air.
Another friend switched on a small speaker to something brighter and more upbeat.
Cheers filled the garden.
Congratulations came from every direction.
The bride-to-be looked around in complete surprise.
"You were all hiding?"
"Of course!" Dara laughed, pulling her into a tight hug. "We've been hiding since you guys were still at the café! Tobi texted us when you left the café!"
Femi shook his head dramatically.
"And let me tell you, hiding behind flowers in this morning sun is not as romantic as it looks."
Everyone burst into laughter.
The groom grinned.
"You all knew?"
"Every single one of us," someone answered.
"And none of you told me?" Ada asked, pretending to be offended.
Dara raised both hands innocently.
"I deserve an award for keeping this secret."
"You nearly spoiled it twice," Femi reminded her.
"I said nearly!"
Laughter echoed through the garden once again as cameras came out, hugs continued, and the happiest morning of their lives unfolded beneath the morning sun.
Tobi was still staring at the ring on Ada's finger when Femi walked over and nudged his shoulder.
"You can blink now," he teased.
Tobi laughed, unable to take his eyes off Ada.
"I can't believe she said yes."
Ada smiled.
"I've said it three times already."
"And I'll probably ask you again before the morning is over."
Dara slipped her arm through Ada's.
"You know he's going to spend the next week making sure he didn't imagine this."
"I probably will," Tobi admitted.
Ada shook her head, laughing softly before lifting her hand once more. The diamond sparkled in the morning light.
"It's real."
Tobi reached for her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers.
"It's real," he echoed.
For a brief moment, no one spoke.
The four friends simply stood there, smiling at one another.
It felt like the beginning of something beautiful.
Femi cleared his throat dramatically.
"Alright, enough staring at each other."
The three of them turned to look at him.
"I've been standing here in this sun for thirty whole minutes, and not one person has thanked the man who helped keep this proposal a secret."
Dara folded her arms.
"You mean the same man who almost called Ada this morning and said, 'Don't be late for the proposal'?"
Femi rubbed the back of his neck.
"I corrected myself before she noticed."
"You corrected yourself because I snatched your phone," Dara replied.
Ada burst into laughter.
"You almost spoiled everything?"
"Almost," Tobi answered, chuckling. "But somehow we survived."
Femi placed a hand over his heart.
"I carried this secret like a true hero."
"A very dramatic hero," Dara corrected.
Ada looked from Dara to Femi, her smile growing warmer.
"Thank you... both of you. This morning wouldn't have been the same without you."
The teasing disappeared for a moment.
Dara hugged Ada tightly, while Femi gave Tobi's shoulder a firm squeeze.
"We'll always be here," Dara said softly.
"For both of you," Femi added.
Tobi glanced at Ada, his heart fuller than ever.
For the first time, the future didn't feel uncertain.
It felt exciting.
