"We Grabbed Who?!"

1077 Words
The warehouse echoed with silence. No one moved. No one spoke. The words still lingered in the air. "We took the wrong couple." It was unbelievable. Months of planning... Weeks of surveillance... Countless late-night meetings... Ruined by one wrong turn. One of the masked men snatched the photograph from the floor and stared at it again. He compared it to Tobi. Then to Ada. Then back to the photograph. His shoulders dropped. "...It's really them." Another man rubbed both hands over his face. "No..." "No, this can't be happening." "It already happened." The reply came quietly, but it landed like a hammer. Across the room, another kidnapper suddenly pointed an accusing finger. "This is your fault." "My fault?" "You were watching the convoy." "I watched the convoy!" "You watched the wrong convoy!" "I watched the one that left first!" "I told you to confirm the number plate!" "The ribbons covered it!" "So you guessed?" "I didn't guess!" "You guessed!" "I made a professional decision!" "It was a terrible professional decision!" Before anyone could stop him, another masked man stepped between them. "Enough!" Neither listened. "You nearly ruined everything!" "Nearly?" "We kidn*pped complete strangers!" The argument was growing louder by the second. Ada instinctively moved closer to Tobi. Without taking his eyes off the kidnappers, he reached for her hand. She squeezed it tightly. "What do we do?" she whispered. "For now..." "We watch." The driver slowly leaned toward them. "I have an idea." They both looked at him. "We run." Tobi glanced around the warehouse. "There are too many of them." The driver sighed. "I knew you'd say that." The brown file was opened again. This time... More carefully. One of the kidnappers began reading. "Target..." "...Victor Okafor." He turned the page. "Bride..." "...Nneka Okafor." Another page. "Destination after reception..." "...private residence." Another page. "Estimated ransom value..." He stopped reading. Nobody needed to hear the amount. It was obvious now. This hadn't been random. Someone had spent months planning this k********g. Unfortunately... They had kidn*pped the wrong bride. The wrong groom. And the wrong driver. The driver slowly raised his hand. "...Excuse me." Nobody answered. "I'd just like everyone to remember..." "...I wasn't even getting married." One masked man looked at him. "We know." "So..." "...can I go?" "No." "I had to ask." The warehouse grew quiet again. One of the kidnappers removed his gloves and threw them onto a table. "This operation is finished." Another immediately disagreed. "No." "It isn't." "What do you mean 'it isn't'?" "We still have witnesses." "So?" "So what happens if we release them?" He pointed toward Ada and Tobi. "They've seen this place." "They've heard our voices." "They've seen our vehicles." "They'll go straight to the police." Another man folded his arms. "And if we keep them?" Silence. No one answered. Because that question was even harder. The youngest among them finally spoke. "This wasn't the plan." "No." "It wasn't." "We were supposed to take two people." "We took two different people." "And an innocent driver." Everyone turned to look at the driver. He smiled awkwardly. "I appreciate the recognition." Even one of the kidnappers laughed quietly. Another quickly elbowed him. "This isn't funny." "I know." "But he is." The driver looked almost proud. "Thank you." "I wasn't complimenting you." "Oh." For the first time since arriving, Ada spoke. Her voice was calm. Much calmer than she felt. "You've made a mistake." Nobody interrupted her. "Keeping us won't change that." She looked from one masked face to another. "It will only make things worse." A few eyes dropped toward the floor. She continued. "We don't know who you wanted." "We don't want to know." "We just want to go home." Tobi stepped forward slightly. "My wife is right." "If your plan has failed..." "Don't make another mistake trying to fix it." The warehouse became so quiet that the dripping of rainwater somewhere outside could be heard. One of the kidnappers looked away. Another rubbed the back of his neck. For a brief moment... It almost seemed as though they were listening. Then a different voice broke the silence. "...It's too late." Ada looked at him. "What do you mean?" "If we release you..." "...you'll tell the police." "You'll describe this place." "You'll describe us." "And then..." "...our families become the next victims." The words chilled the room. Not because they were threatening Ada and Tobi. But because they revealed something deeper. These men weren't just protecting themselves. They believed their own families would suffer if this operation failed. The driver swallowed. "So..." "...everyone's life is complicated tonight." Nobody replied. He sighed. "I miss my wife already." One kidnapper looked at him. "You're married?" "For twelve years." "Were you also going on honeymoon?" The driver frowned. "At my age?" A few quiet chuckles escaped before the room settled again. Suddenly... A loud engine echoed outside. Everyone froze. Another engine followed. Headlights swept across the cracks in the warehouse walls. The kidnappers looked at one another. One of them hurried toward the window. He carefully lifted a corner of the curtain and looked outside. His shoulders stiffened. Slowly... Very slowly... He turned back toward the others. His voice had lost every trace of confidence. "...They're here." The room fell into complete silence. No one needed to ask who. Whatever was waiting outside... It wasn't part of the original plan. A ripple of panic swept through the warehouse. "What do you mean, they're here?" one of the masked men whispered. "I mean exactly what I said." "Did anyone tell them about this location?" "No." "Then how did they find us?" "I don't know!" Another hurried to the window and carefully peered through a narrow c***k. A long black SUV rolled to a stop outside. Then another. The engines fell silent. For a few seconds, nobody got out. The warehouse became so quiet that everyone could hear their own breathing. The driver leaned closer to Tobi and whispered, "If those are more kidnappers..." "...I officially resign." Despite everything, Tobi let out the faintest smile. One of the masked men quickly pulled the curtain shut. "Everyone, stay calm." "Calm?" another snapped. "You just said there are people outside!" "I said stay calm, not perform miracles." Footsteps echoed from outside. Slow. Steady. Drawing closer to the warehouse door. Every kidnapper instinctively reached for a weapon. Ada's fingers tightened around Tobi's hand. Whatever was about to happen next... It was clear the night had taken another unexpected turn.
