Chapter 3

"Byron has been lying here for a full twenty-eight days, and my heart is nearly broken." The lady took a silk handkerchief from her handbag and gently wiped away the tears forming in the corners of her eyes. Amanda and I exchanged a helpless glance, unsure of how to comfort her. No matter how wealthy someone might be, they seemed equally helpless in the face of illness. "Miss!" She suddenly grabbed my other hand, her emotions clearly heightened. "You must have a strong connection with my son Byron! The moment you arrived, his hand moved!" "Ma'am, you must have misunderstood. I'm not his girlfriend!" I hurried to explain, though my voice felt a bit dry. The woman paused, looking confused as she turned to Amanda. "Then who is?" Amanda quickly explained the situation and apologized, "I'm sorry. Mrs. Crowe. Laura, this is the patient's mother—Karen. Sorry, Mrs. Crowe, the hospital has been so busy today that I didn't have a chance to explain things to you. Laura is helping me to take care of your son..." Just then, Amanda's phone rang. It was the doctor calling her to the operating room for assistance. The woman showed no signs of annoyance and urged Amanda to hurry with understanding. I planned to take the opportunity to slip away, but at that moment... "I'm sorry, my son isn't usually like this. I'll make him let go." She seemed a bit embarrassed as she walked to the bedside and leaned down to whisper a few words in the man's ear. However, it had no effect. The man still held my hand tightly. In the end, the woman had to take action herself. After quite a struggle, she finally pried his fingers off mine, rescuing me from his grasp. "I'm sorry, Miss," she said with an apologetic smile. I shook my head, eager to leave since I needed to get to work or I would be late. In the evening, I returned to the hospital with dinner, finding my mom leaning against the bed, watching the news. "Laura, you must have had a tough day. Why don't you skip bringing dinner tomorrow? I can just grab something to eat at the hospital," she suggested. "Don't try to fool me. The food at the hospital is ridiculously expensive. To save money, there's no way you'll get a decent meal." I joked as I set the food out on the table. She sighed and said nothing more, quietly eating her meal. As I packed the lunchbox from earlier into a bag to take home for cleaning, I suddenly noticed an extra bag of apples on the table. "Mom, who came to see you?" "Amanda brought them over this afternoon. She said you helped her a lot at noon and insisted on bringing some fruit to thank you. The apples are really sweet. You should try some," she replied. Thinking back to the misunderstanding from earlier made me feel a bit embarrassed. Just then, there was a gentle knock at the door. My mom's hospital roommates had already been discharged that morning, so I wondered who could be looking for us now. I stood up and walked to the door. Through the frosted glass, I vaguely saw a figure in black clothing. When I opened the door, I was surprised to find the wealthy woman from earlier. "Mrs. Crowe?" I felt a twinge of nerves. I was afraid that she would come here to demand money from me. 'Did I somehow hurt her son?' "Laura, who is it?" my mom called from the bed. "Oh, it's from the next room!" I quickly replied. I stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind me, not wanting my mom to overhear. "Excuse me, is there something you need?" I asked cautiously. The wealthy woman smiled gently and apologized, "I'm sorry to disturb you." There was a hint of hesitation in her expression as if she had a difficult request to make. I guessed that her son's caregiver hadn't arrived yet and she wanted me to help care for him again. "Actually... this might sound a bit forward, but I want to ask you something." Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears, and her emotions were clearly heightened. "Could you... marry my son?" "What?" I was nearly speechless, stunned by her words, and my heart raced. She grasped my hand tightly, her voice thick with emotion. "My son reacts to you! You're the only one who seems to make him respond! The doctor said if he doesn't wake up in the next few days, he might never wake up. Please, as long as you're willing to marry him, I will agree to any condition!"
