Dimitri knew the moment Hex got the text from Keith because she had gone from furious to downright sullen. As they sat in the lobby at the hospital, she tried so hard to hide the tears in her eyes from him. He had never felt guilt before, but he felt it now. Though he did not regret it.
"Ms. Ramirez?" Dimitri looked up and saw Shauna, the nurse that had helped him with the paternity test. She had seemed surprised to see him with her, but hid it well before Hex noticed. "Let's take you back."
Dimitri ached to hold his son, but his mother had been clutching him to her chest since her mood soured. She was cradling him like a safety blanket and though he liked that she was so devoted to him, Dimitri wondered how long it would be before she would reach for him like that out of comfort. It was something he never wanted from a woman before.
He followed her back into the series of rooms, carrying the large carrier and bag easily. As they walked by, a few nurses noticed him and their hushed whispers weren't hard to hear. He wanted to tell them to mind their own business, but he just smiled as they passed.
Shauna led them to a small room that had numerous posters of smiling kids and colorful art to grab children's attention. Dimitri couldn't help but wonder if his son would take after him or not because he used to have such affinity for art before his father pushed him into the family business when he was 14.
"Dr. Hank will be with you shortly, but let me go ahead and get Lucifer's measurements and weight." Shauna held out her hands for Hex to hand him over. The transfer was slow because Hex never trusted anyone not to drop him.
When she finally sat back down, Dimitri risked grabbing her hand. She jumped a bit at the touch but he was happy when she didn't pull away.
Shauna smiled down at Lucy as he gurgled a small laugh up at her. "He is literally the best mannered baby ever."
Hex gave a half smile. "Hopefully he stays that way. Lord knows his daddy didn't."
Shauna flinched but Hex was looking at the ground. He was betting Shauna expected him to get mad at the insult. If it were any other person, he would, but how could he get mad at her? She had given him the most precious gift anyone could give him. No, the only person on this Earth that could ever get away with slighted words against him was his Hex. "I was a good kid, thank you very much."
When he just smiled at Hex, the nurse relaxed a bit and got to work on Lucy. Not many people got to see this side of him so he understood why it made Shauna uncomfortable.
She had asked Hex some questions that Dimitri knew he'd store for his own knowledge. Things like 'How was Lucy sleeping?' and 'Still no more problems during feeding since switching to formula?' as well as a few questions pertaining to Hex's health. Everything was answered to suggest nothing but healthy mom and son. He wasn't entirely sure, but Dimitri suspected she asked those entirely for his benefit. He appreciated it either way.
Not long afterwards, Shauna finished. Lucy was 23 inches and 10lbs. Perfectly normal and healthy sized. She picked him up gently and turned to hand him back to Hex. "I'll give the doctor the information and he'll be in here shortly."
Dimitri had to give up her hand so she could hold Lucy. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and huddled over his son just as Shauna left the room with a soft click. He gave Lucy his finger to nom on.
"I think I've decided on where to take you tonight." He told her. Though he would keep it a secret for now, he wanted to take her someplace they would be able to be close together. According to Sven, Hex had been disappointed with her last 'haunted maze' so he was going to take her to a much less PG rated one. He knew the owner since he was a regular consumer of snow and he'd happily change the group sizing from four to two for the night.
Hex frowned. She had been feeling uncomfortable with his touches, but she hadn't wanted to make a scene in front of the nurse and now shaking him off would only bother Lucy since he seemed to really enjoy gnawing on his finger. "Goodie."
Dimitri looked at her and she did her best to avoid looking back. "Still fighting me, huh? Even after last night?"
He loved how cute she looked when her cheeks heated. "That shouldn't have happened, Dimitri. It doesn't matter how attracted I am to you, we need boundaries if this is going to work."
Dimitri sighed with feeling. "I've never been good with boundaries, Hex."
"Yeah, no shit." She motioned to Lucifer for emphasis. "For all I know, you knocked me up again after last night."
Dimitri threw back his head and laughed. It prompted Lucy to wiggle out his limbs and scream out a laugh to match. "If you're pregnant again I'll marry you today!" He managed to plant a kiss on her lips just as a short loud knock hit the door.
Dr. Hank was a tall plump man in his 50's who had a permanent scowl plastered to his face. Hex always hated the pedo stache he never seemed to grow tired of. "Hello Ms. Ramirez and…?" His gray blue eyes narrowed on Dimitri.
"Dimitri Chang." He offered helpfully. This wasn't one of his doctors, but he knew of him. Dr. Hank was known for being a hard ass and didn't take orders from others well. He tended to butt heads with the others in the hospital.
"The father?" Dr. Hank sat down in the small rolling chair and scooted to the computer screen on the desk.
"Yep." Dimitri wondered if the fat ass would have that ungrateful tone if he knew who he was dealing with. He didn't want Hex to see that side of him just yet. She'd surely run right now if she did.
"Nice to finally meet you." The doctor's tone dripped with disapproval.
"Dr. Hank, Dimitri came here with me because he wanted to discuss health concerns." Hex sat forward a bit.
"Oh? A doctor now, is he?"
Okay, now this fucker was pissing Dimitri off. "I had cancer when I was a baby. Excuse me if I'm concerned if my son could have inherited it from me."
Dr. Hank snorted but didn't provoke any further. He may be a d**k but he was a good doctor. "What kind?"
"Leukemia."
Dr. Hank nodded. "We'll schedule some tests to give him a look over. Previous blood tests didn't detect anything abnormal."
Dimitri narrowed his eyes. "Why can't you do anything now?"
Dr. Hank snorted. "That's not how things work, your majesty. Lucifer shows no immediate signs and there's this thing called appointments. Others are waiting for the same tests and you can't jump the line."
Sensing a dark anger in him, Hex grabbed his hand and smiled at the doctor. "That's fine. We can wait." She didn't want him causing a scene and embarrassing her.
"I'll have Shauna set something up for you. Lucifer, testing aside, I'd say you have a very healthy baby boy. Increasing his feedings just a bit is my only recommendation." Dr. Hank stood up and started making his way toward the door.
"Pleasure meeting you, Mr. Chang." The tone said otherwise and he left.
"You just rub everyone the wrong way don't you, Mr. Chang?" Hex smiled and started to put Lucifer in his carrier.
"I think I rub you just right." Dimitri purred, making her blush.
"Yeah. Me and who knows how many others. So flattering."
"There are no 'others' now." Dimitri said as he stood up while Hex clicked Lucy's straps together.
"Excuse me?" Hex looked up at him.
"I meant it when I said I want you, Hex. f*****g other women won't do me any favors." Dimitri was amazed at himself when he realized he meant it. The thought of being inside any other woman just sounded...revolting.
"You mean that don't you?" Hex whispered as she searched his face.
"Yeah. I do."
Shauna came in then. She announced to them that the soonest testing that could be scheduled was next week, which Hex accepted. Dimitri was less than pleased. He never had to wait for anything so it was pure ridiculous that his son would have to. He'd make a call to Amir later and have someone send the good doctor an update.
When Hex was signing a few papers at the front desk, Dimitri pulled Shauna aside. The small blonde shook where she stood and kept her eyes at her feet. She was terrified. He was used to it. "Forward all of Lucifer's information and charts to Dr. Young. Dr. Hank won't be working here for long."
"Yes sir. It'll be done before the end of the night. And of Ms. Ramirez? Would you like me to forward her information as well?" She whispered.
"It'll be Mrs. Chang in the near future so yes. I'll make sure you get a bonus for all your help. Keep my affiliation away from her until further notice." Dimitri left her there just as Hex finished signing. She now had her phone balanced between her face and shoulder.
"Yeah, I can make it at noon. How long can I expect to be? I need to know whether or not I can bring my son or if I need to have my mother watch him." She was saying.
Dimitri arched an eyebrow at her. She mouthed 'job'. Ah. "I'll take him so you can go. Just let me know where you want me to meet up with you when you're done."
Hex hesitated, caught between her conversation on the phone and his words. Finally she asked the person on the phone to please hold. "Where would you take him?"
Dimitri smiled. "He has a grandfather who can't wait to meet him."
Hex frowned. She didn't like the idea of people she didn't know around her son. Regardless if they were supposed family. "I don't know about that, Dimitri. I've never met your father and I don't exactly trust you either."
He ran a hand through his white hair and pouted. "I'm his father, Hex. I won't let anyone hurt our child. That includes my father. Even if I wanted to, I can't just run off with him. I know I've been an ass, but please trust me that I'll never do anything to hurt him."
Hex bit her lip nervously and it was the sexiest thing he ever saw. Finally she sighed, "Fine. If you do anything to disappoint-"
Dimitri cupped her face and kissed her again. When she tried to pull back, he held on. There were a few giggles from the secretaries which seemed to calm her fighting.
When he pulled back he beamed down at her. "I won't disappoint you this time, baby."
That beautiful blush heated her cheeks again and Dimitri decided that he wanted to see how often he could get her to blush. It would be his new favorite game.
