Chapter 12: War

Hex handled things better than Dimitri hoped for. Taking Keith out of the picture had been a great decision. Adding the false foreclosure paper to the emptied store had been a f*****g brilliant idea. Amir had been the mastermind about that. It had planted doubt into her mind about what a stand up guy the fucker had been. Had he simply killed him, he wouldn't have had that seed to plant and this probably wouldn't have been as smooth a transition. She not only agreed to go public about their affair, but she had also agreed to state that they had been dating behind the scenes for a long time. It painted a grand love story to the public about fear of backlash because of how nasty his fans could be and it did exactly what he had hoped. It poured in tons of sympathy and support because otherwise they'd only be proving him right. No one wanted to admit they were toxic. It must be heartbreaking to hide your love because of people you don't even know! Celebrities are people too! Let them be happy! She's so pretty! How have I never heard of her before? Hex's following had increased by almost twenty fold overnight and she had numerous calls and offers from magazines, major clothing lines, tv interviews and commercial appearances. Being Dimitri's sweetie apparently had massive perks. Everyone wanted to get on her good side because that meant the possibility of meeting him. The one thing she had been hesitant on had been truly dating him out in public. Though they had agreed to it, she was a bit shy when people spotted them together and especially when people wanted to see Lucy. Dimitri knew that she had only agreed to his suggestion because it was the best option to protect her from taking a hit financially, but she still didn't trust him. Not when it came to her. She also still blamed him for having to change Lucifer's last name to 'Chang' when a reporter put her on the spot about why it wasn't already. He hadn't even figured out how the b***h found out that information. It took about two months, but eventually things calmed down like he had expected. Lucy's hair was now a wild mane of black hair and he could officially hold up his own head and eat the mushy baby food. The little chunker had put on a good four pounds which Hex found beyond adorable. He was also blissfully cancer free. Thank god. Dr. Hank had 'quit' only a few days after they had visited and Dr. Young had managed to see Lucy much faster. He had been terrified that Dimitri would be pissed about even that, but having Hex with him granted him patience he'd never normally have, so the doctor didn't even get a warning. Though his son had clearly developed a love for him and even his father, he was still bothered by the fact that Hex still kept him at such an arms length. She had been very clever in her attempts to never be alone with him so he hadn't been able to make love to her since that night. He knew she did it on purpose, because she was stubborn and determined to have her way, but so was he and he wasn't giving up on her. The ones worth keeping are worth chasing. Lucy was currently napping on his blanket on the couch since it was Dimitri's day to have him. Hex would be here to pick him up later tonight. She was with her friend Susie right now. Though he didn't like it. It was supposed to have been an all female party, which is why he hadn't been able to go, but Susie had made it known on her Nstagram stories that she had a few male friends. It made him irate. Ever since they came forward with their relationship people from both sides had come out to try to see if they could 'steal' them from each other. He knew that he wanted no one else, but Hex...she made it very clear that their relationship was purely business. That made doubt settle in him and he didn't like being unsure of anything. It made him downright foul when he thought of Hex smiling with another man. "Don't worry, we know exactly who's over there, boss man. If anything happens we'll deal with it." Amir said softly from the recliner. Dimitri sighed heavily, hating how pathetic he felt. He had never waited on a woman before. It was absolutely infuriating. "I trust she won't do anything to damage her image, but I appreciate it. If she decides to take an interest in another guy I don't think I'll be able to stop myself from letting loose." Dimitri ran his hand over Lucy's little diaper bottom. He seemed to really like snuggling up to the felt blanket on his bare skin. "It doesn't help that the Jamaicans have been unusually quiet." Sven mumbled from the kitchen behind him. He was nursing his third glass of vodka. How the big bastard stomached that s**t straight, he'd never know. The Jamaicans had been unusually quiet and there was no word as to where they were hiding. If he knew, he'd take a squad of guys and just go kill them all. It definitely would help him release all the tension and frustration he felt. "Double the reward for useful information to where the fuckers are hiding." Dimitri decided. "You wanna pay someone ten large for information?" Amir snickered and put his arms behind his head. "Clearly the current isn't enough and I'm getting antsy. It's been two f*****g months since I had p***y, man. I need to kill something! Somethings gotta give." Dimitri sagged his head back onto the couch. "Just get something on the side until she gives in. I don't know why you're holding out for her." Sven mumbled. Dimitri frowned and looked at the big Russian upside down. "I don't want anyone else. If I just wanted to f**k a hole, I wouldn't be going through all this trouble to bring her to me. I don't expect you to understand you f*****g elephant." "I sent out a mass text doubling the amount for information. Hopefully, we'll hear something soon." Amir said just as Lucifer kicked his legs and made soft whimpering noises. He always was a little whiny when he woke up. If Dimitri or Hex wasn't around, he'd throw a full fledged tantrum. So Dimitri gently scooped him up. "Good. If we hear nothing by tomorrow, double it again." Dimitri laughed as a familiar unpleasant smell hit his nose. "Geeze, kid. You s**t more than the Russian!" Amir laughed but Sven didn't quite understand why it was so funny. He hadn't expected him to. Sven didn't exactly have the best sense of humor. Dimitri was in the middle of changing Lucy when his phone rang. He was stunned when he saw that it was Hex. She never called him unless to meet up with him somewhere and pick up Lucy. When he answered it, he expected anything other than her hushed panicked whisper. "Dimitri! Are you there?" "What's wrong?" Every instinct he had told him that he needed to go protect his woman. She was quiet for a second and Dimitri snapped his fingers at Amir and Sven before placing her on speaker phone. "I left Susie's cz this guy was getting on my nerves and I think he's following me. But he's not alone anymore." "Where are you and what do they look like?" A normal person would have wasted time asking her why did she leave the party. Why hadn't she called the police? Why was this guy there in the first place when it was supposed to be girls only? Those questions could be asked later once she was safe. "Uh, African American? Both dressed nice. Like Amir. One has dreads. I'm about four blocks from your place. I stopped in that coffee shop because there are a lot of people here, but they just announced they are closing soon." Her voice cracked with emotion. She was scared. Dimitri felt rage because he had absolutely no doubts as to who was trailing after her. So, the Jamaicans were making a move on his girl, huh? It was desperate even for them. The sheer audacity that they'd be this bold made him anxious to get real personal with them. "Listen to me. I'm going to have Amir stay here and watch Lucy. Sven and I are coming to get you. Whatever you do, do not leave. Do you understand me?" They were already in motion. Sven held the door open for him and they ran down the stairs to the Escalade the big man favored. "Yeah. That's an easy promise. I think I've spent a small fortune on muffins just trying to keep busy interacting with people. I thought I was paranoid at first, but it's been over half an hour…" Dimitri hated how scared she sounded, even though she was trying so hard not to let it show. He was a man who dealt very intimately with fear so he knew it well. "Don't worry baby, we're coming." Dimitri slid into the passenger seat and opened the glove box to pull out a glock 19. The serial number and barrel had been filed down long ago to prevent anything being linked back to him if it was ever used and found. It was one of the many ghost pieces they accumulated from downed pigs. Sven was always packing so he didn't bother asking him. He just checked to make sure it was loaded before slipping it into his waistband. "What was that?" Hex asked. She had heard the click of the clip going back in. "Seat belt." He lied smoothly. "We're almost there, baby." She sighed into the phone, her voice barely a whisper. "It's just us now. Please hurry. They are watching me." Dimitri saw the shop now and the couple that had just left, leaving Hex alone inside with the Jamaicans and the employees. "We got back up." Sven said just as they pulled over, screeching to a stop. Dimitri didn't even hesitate to jump out of the car even though he heard three other cars screeching behind him. He could see Hex sitting at the table closest to the register and the two black men she described sitting closest by the door. They chose it with purpose because there'd be no way for her to leave without them seeing. The moment they spotted Dimitri making his way like a bull toward them they went for their guns. She must have seen them because she launched herself behind the register which is why he felt safe enough to draw his glock. Shots started firing before he managed to pull the trigger, though he didn't get hit. The one with the dreads died instantly from Dimitri's shot to the head. Amir may have been a master at knife combat while Sven was an excellent sniper, but Dimitri was a healthy mix of both. The other Jamacian launched through the broken glass door and ran down the street away from the gunfire. "GET AFTER HIM!" Dimitri yelled as he put the safety on his glock and ran inside. He trusted his guys to get the fucker who dared go after Hex. Hex was huddled on the ground with her hands over her ears next to one of the restaurant workers. When he grabbed her shoulders, she jerked away from him screaming. He had to shake her to get him to look at her. "It's me! It's me! Baby! Look!" She was, but she was in such a state of shock that it took her a few seconds to process who she was looking at. When it finally hit her, she threw her arms around his neck and sobbed hysterically. "We got this boss. Get her out of here." Sven came in behind him. Dimitri knew he was going to wipe the place of any camera footage and give the good employees hush cash as to what really happened...probably lined with threats to keep them motivated. Dimitri nodded and picked her shaking body up. "It's okay, baby. We're going home. You're safe." He kissed her head and repeated it over and over to her. When he got into the Escalade, all the other cars were already gone. He heard sirens in the distance but he was positive that Sven could do what he needed to do and get ghosted before they arrived. Hex sat in his lap side saddle style, shivering like a leaf, but she was clinging so hard to him that he could feel her heartbeat. When he returned to his condo, he parked the Escalade inside the garage just to make sure if it had been spotted in the getaway, cops wouldn't come knocking on his door. He'd order Sven to get rid of it later. "Why did they shoot at you?" Hex finally whispered. "Let me get you inside, baby. Ask whatever you want inside, okay?" He caressed her face until she finally just nodded. "I...don't think I can walk." He laughed. "I got you. Don't worry." Dimitri shifted her weight and easily lifted her out of the massive SUV. She was so light that it was easy to get her inside. Amir was sitting on the floor with Lucy who was laughing and making faces at him. "Look! It's momma! Can you say momma, Lucy? No? How about Amir?" Dimitri sat Hex down in the recliner, but when she wouldn't let go, he moved to sit down with her in his lap. "Make her a drink, Amir." "Something with alcohol please." She mumbled into his neck. "Rum and coke coming right up. Malibu, right?" He inquired. Hex didn't even ask how he knew. All of Dimitri's friends were scary observant when it came to them. She gave a nod that he couldn't see so Dimitri nodded for her. Once Amir walked into the kitchen Hex repeated her question. He knew he was going to have to answer this sooner or later. He just had hoped it wasn't going to be so soon. Depending on how she handled this news would determine her happiness in the future. Because even if she hated him, he would not give her or Lucifer up. "I wanted to keep you out of it, honestly. I never would have imagined they'd go after someone so close to me, but they are clearly getting desperate." He sighed and said, "The easiest explanation is I'm in the mafia." She sucked in a breath and grew very still just as Amir came back to hand her her glass. "So modest, this guy. 'In the mafia'. He's the mother f*****g prince of the Triad. Well...one of them anyway. There are nine families." Dimitri glared at Amir because he was trying to ease her into this. He just shrugged and went back to playing with Lucifer who was happy to have him back. "Those men...were going to kill me...weren't they?" She shifted in his lap so she could drink without spilling it on herself. "Probably not right away, but yes. We've almost driven them out of the city so I can also assume that if they were desperate enough to go after you, then they will try for Lucy too." When he finished she had silent tears going down her face and he hated it. "They won't stop if I announce I left you, will they?" Her distraught hurt his heart and the thought that she'd even entertain the idea of running from him made him want to lock her away forever. But he wouldn't do that unless he absolutely had to. "No. They won't stop." She laughed, downed her drink, laughed some more and then covered her face while she suddenly cried. Dimitri took her drink and motioned for Amir to make her another before he hugged her to him. She didn't push him away which was a fantastic sign. "I promise you that they will not hurt you. For this, I will kill them all. I won't let anyone hurt you or Lucifer. Okay?" Amir appeared with another drink for her which she gladly accepted. "You said they'd go after Lucy. Would they hurt him?" He hated being honest with her, but he knew it was the best thing for her to hear. If he didn't scare her with the truth and they got hurt because he was too soft to give her the brutal truth he'd never forgive himself. "Yes. Without hesitation and without remorse. They would do things to him not even horror movies dare to touch." She clenched her glass and a look of such darkness passed over her face that made him decide then that he loved her. Truly. It was a look he knew that he had when he was ready to kill someone. She turned those beautiful eyes to him and said, "Then I hope you kill every last f*****g one of them!" He cupped her face and smiled, letting her see exactly who he was underneath the surface that no one else got to see. "I swear it to you. As long as you're with me, you and our son will be the most protected people on the planet." For the first time since she met him, Hex kissed him first.
