Chapter Five: The Truth Beneath the Surface

1534 Words
The newspaper clippings trembled in Adanna’s hands. Missing. Presumed dead. Her own face stared back at her from the yellowed paper, frozen in time—a girl the world believed was gone. Her breath came in short, sharp bursts. This wasn’t real. It couldn’t be real. She flipped through the other articles. More of the same. Headlines screaming about a tragic accident. A search that ended in heartbreak. A family grieving a daughter they would never see again. Adanna felt like the floor was tilting beneath her. If she had been missing… then why was she here? And why had Daniel kept this hidden from her? Her pulse roared in her ears. Had he lied to her about everything? ⸻ A Dangerous Confrontation The door creaked. Adanna barely had time to shove the papers back into the box before the soft glow of a flashlight illuminated the room. Daniel stood in the doorway. For a split second, neither of them moved. Then his eyes dropped to the floor—to the open plank, to the metal box in her lap. His entire body tensed. “Adanna.” Her fingers gripped the papers tighter. “What is this?” Her voice came out raw, shaky. Daniel stepped forward, his movements slow and deliberate. “Where did you find that?” Adanna shot to her feet, clutching the box against her chest. “Why is my name in these articles?” Daniel sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Adanna—” “Tell me the truth!” she snapped. “Why does everyone think I’m dead?” Something flickered across his face—guilt. Adanna’s stomach twisted. He had known all along. Daniel exhaled heavily. “I was going to tell you. When you were ready.” Her vision blurred with fury. “You kept this from me! You kept me locked in this house, pretending like you were protecting me, when all this time—” She shook the papers in her hands. “The world thinks I don’t exist!” Daniel took another step toward her. “Because I saved you.” The words sent a chill down her spine. Adanna swallowed hard. “What do you mean?” He hesitated, like he was weighing his next words carefully. Then, finally—“You weren’t supposed to survive that night.” Her heart stopped. What? The walls of the room seemed to shrink, closing in around her. “What are you saying?” Her voice was barely above a whisper. Daniel’s jaw tightened. “That night… on the boat… you didn’t fall, Adanna.” His voice was almost pained. “Someone tried to kill you.” ⸻ Fragments of a Nightmare The words crashed into her like a wave. Adanna staggered back, shaking her head. “No. That’s not—” Her memories were still fractured, still slipping through her fingers like water. But suddenly, the flashes of the past felt sharper. The beach. The fear. The feeling of someone chasing her. Her stomach churned. “Who?” Daniel’s expression darkened. “You don’t remember, do you?” Adanna clenched her fists. “Then tell me.” He hesitated. And that hesitation told her everything. She stepped forward. “You’re still lying to me.” “I’m not,” Daniel said quickly. “I’m just—” “Who was it?!” His jaw clenched. “It was someone you trusted.” The room spun. Her hands shook as she tried to piece together the fragments of her mind. Someone she trusted. A face flickered in her memory—warm eyes, a familiar laugh, a whispered promise. But then—fear. Pain. Cold water closing in. Adanna sucked in a sharp breath. Someone had tried to drown her. She took a step back. “I need to go.” Daniel’s eyes widened. “Adanna, wait—” “No.” She turned toward the door. “I need answers. I need to know who did this to me.” Daniel grabbed her wrist before she could move. “I’m the only one who can protect you.” Adanna wrenched her arm away, her pulse racing. “No,” she whispered. “You’re the only one keeping me trapped.” Daniel’s face fell. For the first time, he looked… lost. Adanna’s breath came in sharp gasps. She was done waiting. Done being kept in the dark. She was getting out of here. Tonight. ⸻ An Escape Plan Adanna paced her room, her mind racing. She needed a way out. The window. Too risky. The front door. Locked. She had to be smart. Careful. She glanced at the clock. 2:13 AM. Daniel was asleep. The house was silent. Her heart pounded as she crept toward the door, pressing her ear against it. No sound. She reached for the handle, bracing herself for it to be locked. It wasn’t. Her breath caught. Slowly, she turned it and stepped out into the dark hallway. The house stretched before her—empty, quiet, full of secrets. Adanna took a slow, steady breath. One step at a time. She was going to find the truth. Even if it killed her. Adanna’s bare feet made no sound as she stepped into the hallway. Every shadow felt alive. Every creak of the old wooden floor felt deafening. Her heart pounded so loudly she was afraid Daniel would hear it from his room. She had no plan. No idea where to go. She only knew one thing—she couldn’t stay here. But as she crept toward the staircase, something made her stop. The study door. It was slightly open. Adanna’s pulse quickened. Daniel had never let her inside. What was in there? A sudden thought hit her—if he had been hiding the newspaper clippings, what else was he hiding? Her fingers trembled as she pushed the door open. ⸻ A Room of Secrets The study smelled like old paper and coffee. A single desk lamp cast a dim glow over the room, illuminating piles of documents, notebooks, and photographs. Adanna’s breath caught. On the desk, her own face stared back at her. Photographs of her—some from the past, others recent. Pictures of her at the beach, at a café, walking alone at night. Her stomach twisted. Daniel had been watching her. She picked up one of the notebooks, flipping through the pages. Dates. Places. Detailed notes about her movements. She turned another page—and there it was. Her medical records. Adanna’s fingers clenched around the paper. Why would Daniel have this? She scanned the notes written in the margins. “Subject suffered head trauma—memory loss expected.” “Signs of trauma-induced dissociation—fugue state possible.” “Must monitor closely—ensure she does not recall too soon.” Adanna’s breath came in sharp gasps. He had been controlling what she remembered. Every conversation. Every moment of confusion. Daniel hadn’t been trying to help her. He had been making sure she didn’t remember. Her hands shook as she flipped the next page. A single name was written there. “Dayo.” Her blood turned to ice. Dayo. She knew that name. A voice echoed in her mind—warm, familiar. Laughter. A hand in hers. A whispered promise. And then—fear. Cold water. A struggle. A scream. Adanna gasped, gripping the edge of the desk. It was him. Dayo had tried to kill her. ⸻ The Lies Unravel A floorboard creaked outside. Adanna’s head snapped up. Daniel was awake. Her pulse thundered. She had to leave now. She shoved the papers into her pocket and backed toward the door. Footsteps. Getting closer. Panic clawed at her chest. She needed a weapon. Something—anything. Her eyes darted around the room. A letter opener. A glass paperweight. She grabbed the letter opener just as the door swung open. Daniel stood there. His face was unreadable, but his eyes flickered to the open notebook in her hand. A slow exhale. “You weren’t supposed to find that.” Adanna clenched the letter opener tighter. “You lied to me.” Daniel closed the door behind him. “Listen to me, Adanna,” he said, voice low, careful. Calm, like he was trying to keep her from running. She took a step back. “You’ve been keeping me here. Watching me. Controlling me.” Daniel’s expression didn’t change. “Because I knew what would happen if you remembered too soon.” Her breath hitched. “What does that mean?” A pause. Then—“Dayo isn’t the only one who wanted you gone.” Adanna’s world tilted. “What?” Daniel’s jaw tensed. “There’s more, Adanna. More than you realize.” She shook her head, stepping further back. No more lies. No more waiting for the truth. She wasn’t going to let Daniel keep her trapped. With one final look at him, she turned and ran. Daniel cursed, lunging after her. But Adanna was already down the hallway, her legs burning as she sprinted toward the door. She was done being a prisoner. She was getting out. No matter what it took.
