Chapter 4 The Backlash Array

423 Words
The Purification Tower had been built to freeze magic out of a prisoner's body. Cold crept through my torn clothes, numbed my cuts, and made each breath smaller than the last. The ice worked slowly. First my fingers stopped bending. Then the thoughts between one line of the array and the next began to break apart. Beyond the iron door, they expected a few days on the ice to cure my jealousy. They expected me to apologize when they came back. They would find a body instead. I dragged my split fingertip through the blood and continued the circle. Each crooked symbol answered an older law than the empire's magic: the Law of Causality. What was stolen had to be returned. A truth for a truth. A life for a life. The array demanded payment before it would collect anyone else's debt. One curve took the sound of my mother's lullabies. Another stripped away the taste of the first summer strawberries. I could remember that those things had happened, but the warmth was gone from them. I finished the last hidden sigil as the iron door groaned open. Seraphina stepped into the grey cell in a white ermine cloak. Her cheeks were pink from the banquet, and sweet wine and roses clung to her. A small black vial rested between her fingers. She crossed the ice in silk slippers and stopped beside my hand. The blood lines were dark enough to pass for random smears unless someone knew what to look for. Seraphina crouched and showed me the smile she never used in front of the others. “Poor little side character. Did you think breaking a few bonds would save you? You're only speeding this up.” Her next words came in the flat vocabulary of a fellow player. “Your mission failed, Elara. Your accumulated progress and narrative weight are loose energy now. Once you're dead, the System will reassign it. Guess who's first in line to collect?” She removed the stopper. The smell from the vial burned my nose. Soul-Rot poison would kill my body, dissolve my spirit, and leave nothing for the return protocol to send home. “I planned to let the tower finish you, but this is cleaner.” Seraphina grabbed my chin. “Consider it a final mercy. Open your mouth.” Black liquid reached the lip of the vial. She waited for me to fight her. I looked past her shoulder at the finished array and smiled. Seraphina had brought its final offering herself.
