In a second, my chains cracked open like a magic spell.
I stood up and looked at my feet. It felt like ages since I had stood. My wrists were red and sore because the chains were so heavy.
I was barefoot when the door opened. I saw hundreds of clothes, shoes, and jewelry.
I was so shocked that I started to shiver. There were many people there, and they did not look human. They were pale with long ears, and they all wore suits.
The old lady from before stepped forward.
“Choose, Miss. My Lord is waiting for you.”
She took a step back. I felt so tired and sick. A million thoughts were running through my head.
A man came forward with white roses. I had never seen flowers like those before.
“From My Lord, to my Lady.”
I did not take them. I looked at the open door. My freedom. No more chains. I was no longer a slave.
I wanted to run, but I was too weak. There were ten tall men in my way. They would catch me and kill me if I tried to bolt.
Nothing felt real. I had to be clever. One mistake could be the end of me.
The doors closed. I was alone.
I picked a dress and some shoes. I did not care which ones.
I went to the bathroom and changed my clothes.
I walked back to the room and knocked on the door three times.
The door opened. I saw a huge hallway. There was gold and black on the walls. The paintings were very tall.
I stepped forward. I played with my hands because I was so nervous. I did not want them to see me shaking.
I walked for a long time. Then, I stopped at a door. It smelled very bad. I felt sick, but I did not throw up.
I saw the old lady behind me. She was still looking at the floor.
“Follow me, my Lady.”
She walked past me. I followed her through many halls and up many stairs.
We stopped at a giant table. It was so big that a hundred people could sit there.
The pale servants were there. They still looked scary.
The old lady led me to a chair. I sat next to the main seat. That seat was huge and frightening.
Suddenly, a servant chained my hands again.
“How am I going to eat with my hands tie—”
I stopped. I heard footsteps.
The air in the room felt heavy and strong.
Every servant put their head down. They all said the same thing at once.
“My Lord.”
I looked at him. He was tall and handsome, but he felt dark. He looked at me like he wanted something from me.
He sat down next to me.
Then, I heard more footsteps.
Another man walked in. He was tall and strong. He had dark eyebrows and a scar. That scar.
He sat down across from me.
I was so scared. I gripped my clothes so tight that my hands hurt.
My legs were shaking.
Are they going to kill me?
The guy with the scar looked at me. He had a scary smile.
“Breakfast looks so delicious.”
I looked at my chains. I knew I could not save myself from these monsters.
The guy in the main chair did not like that. He gave the man with the scar a deathly stare.
The look on his face was so mean and cold.
I wanted to run. I felt like if he looked at me that way, I would faint.
The thought of dying made me feel like I was losing my mind.
They started to bring the food to the table. I did not look at any of it. My feet were shaking so fast. I was sure everyone could see me.
I was too scared to even look at these monsters. I felt the man in the main chair watching me. I did not have to look up to know his eyes were on me.
Suddenly, I heard a deep, scary voice.
“EAT!”
He commanded me.
My hands were shaking as I picked up the food. I did not even know what I was eating.
I was sitting so close to the person who kidnapped me. I was so close to this scary place.
I felt so sick. If I stay at this table for much longer, I think my own thoughts will kill me.
As he ate, he looked at me many times. He smiled in a scary way. I saw him even though I was looking down. I did not even know what I was eating.
What are these people? What do they want from me? They vanish like a spell and come into the room like magic.
I sat there wondering what they wanted. I felt so small next to these monsters.
“I think it is the perfect time for you to know why you are here, my love,” he said.
His voice was dangerously polite. I looked up and met his eyes.
“As soon as you make this place yours, it will be very easy for you.”
I looked at him and felt a chill. He looked so dangerous as he said those words.
“My name is Zaphiton. I am the Lord of Erebus.”
He leaned in closer to me. His voice was low and dark.
“Do not be scared, love. But I am a vampire.”
A vampire? My heart stopped. He is a vampire? He drinks blood—human blood.
He moved his hand toward me and touched my cheek. It did not feel right. He really was a vampire.
It was not a myth; he was a monster.
“I won’t eat you in that way,” he said.
I froze at his touch. He was so close, and his skin felt different. My mind was racing with the thought of him drinking human blood.
