Chapter 23

2338 Words

Ember POV I pushed myself out of bed, feeling the weight of yesterday’s revelations dragging me down. The morning light seemed too bright. Glancing at the clock, I realized I was running late. John would be at my door in a few minutes. After a quick shower, I applied some makeup to mask the puffiness around my eyes. When John arrived, he took one look at me and seemed to understand my condition without needing to ask. He didn’t press for details as I slid into his car, and I was grateful for his silent support. He only asked me how I was. There were no other questions. At work, I threw myself into my tasks, determined to focus and distract myself from the turmoil within. But it was a losing battle. During lunch, I found myself staring into space, my thoughts miles away from the present.
