The next morning I woke up feeling exhausted. My whole body ached, and as I sat up my mind recalled every way Apollo had touched me the night before. We had gone on for hours. I darted my eyes open and glanced around, suddenly growing confused. I remember Apollo taking me to his room, laying me on his gold sheets and showing me what it felt like to need someone so much you couldn't think. But I wasn't in his room anymore, in fact it didn't look like his penthouse at all. I was on a worn out couch in small living room looking like it belonged to an apartment. "Oh good, you're awake." I heard a chirpy voice speak from behind me, moving close and setting a coffee cup on the table next to me.
I turned my head to see Courtney, smiling down at me. "Here, you must have the biggest hangover of your life," she joked, tossing a bottle of pills into my lap. I finished sitting up and rubbed my eyes, glancing around.
"Where are we?" I picked up the bottle, noting it was painkiller. Courtney laughed lightly.
"Wow, you really drank too much, didn't you?" She shakes her head before plopping down on the couch next to me. "We're at my apartment. You got totally wasted at the bar, so I took you home." She smiles sympathetically as she places a hand on my shoulder. "Not that I blame you. Joe is an actual piece of garbage." I grimace, mind going back to the image of Joe, laughing with Emily, then to the ring sitting on her finger. Courtney mistakes my grimace for pain, picking up the coffee mug and holding it towards me. "Drink up, you'll feel better soon."
I took the cup from her hands, taking a sip before holding it in my lap. I pushed the thoughts of Joe and Emily away, glancing around the apartment again before looking down at my clothes. I was wearing the same outfit that Courtney had brough to the bar for me. "What happened to Apollo?" Courtney said we left the bar and came to her apartment, but I remember talking and laughing with him for hours, even long after we had left the bar.
Courtney tilts her head, wrinkling her nose a bit, "What?" I blink at her, confused.
"The guy from the bar?" I say after a moment of hesitation. She stares at me silently before shaking her head.
"Apollo was the drink you kept ordering, we didn't talk to any guys at the bar. That place was as dead as a door nail, I'm surprised it was even open." My mouth opens slightly as I stare at her. What was she talking about? The bar was totally packed.
She watches me, eyes turning from confusion to concern rather quickly. "You should drink that and take the medicine, your mind must be really fuzzy. Rest a bit longer, I'll get you when lunch is ready." Courtney stands up, I watch her walk through a door to the right, noticing the kitchen was behind it.
Alone again, I slump on the couch, staring down at the coffee mug in total confusion. Was Courtney messing with me? There was no way I had imagined the entire night. Maybe I was still asleep? I lifted a hand and pinched my arm. Nope, definitely was awake. I set the coffee mug on the table before standing up. I grimaced, every muscle in my body aching. My mind flashed back to the previous night, remembering the way Apollo's hands caressed my skin and sending a new shiver down my spine. Was it just a dream? But then why was my body so sore?
I stretched my arms over my head, waiting another minute before popping my head into the kitchen. "Where's your bathroom?" I asked Courtney.
"It's just through there," she pointed to a door inside the kitchen. I stepped in and made my way to it. "You can take a shower, if you'd like. I keep a bathrobe in there, but you can use it and I'll get you some clothes.
"Thank you," I step into the bathroom and close the door. I look at myself in the mirror, noticing that I look like a total wreck. Makeup was running all over my face and my hair was up in the worst case of bedhead. I looked around for a brush, combing out my hair before washing my face. A few minutes later and I was stepping into the shower, letting the hot water soothe all of my aching muscles. It was at least ten minutes before I started scrubbing my body, feeling all the dirty and sweat wash away.
Stepping out of the shower, I wiped the fog from the mirror before looking at myself in it. I saw something strange just below my collarbone and leaned forward. Was that a hickey? I rubbed at it, trying to rub it off as if it was just a spot of dirt I missed, but it didn't move. I looked down at myself, seeing it was still there and definitely not going away. But on further inspection, I noticed a few more across my breasts, my stomach, and my inner thighs. That was all the confirmation I needed to know that I definitely did not imagine what happened with Apollo. There was no way he wasn't real.
A soft knock came from the door, startling me from my thoughts. "Are you decent? I brought you clothes." Courtney called from the other side. I looked around and hastily grabbed the bathrobe, putting it on before opening the door.
"Thanks, Court." I take the clothes from her, giving a warm smile.
"Any time, lunch is ready once you're done in here. It's just a couple sandwiches, but I promise they're good." I nod, closing the door and taking a deep breath before getting changed. Brushing out my hair again, I exit the bathroom and make my way to sit next to her at the table. "Feeling better yet?"
I pick up the sandwich and nod, "Yeah, but don't mess with me like that. I thought I was loosing my mind."
Courtney gives me that confused look again, "What do you mean? I wasn't messing with you."
I roll my eyes, "Right," and decide not to argue about it. Courtney could keep playing the bit if she wanted to, I wasn't going to keep buying into it, however.
I stayed at her place the rest of the afternoon. We talked, laughed, watched movies. It was nice just hanging out with a friend, but as the evening rolled around I decided I couldn't push her hospitality any longer. "Thank you for taking care of me, Courtney. I should get out of your hair now."
Courtney smiled as she held the door a moment longer. "It's no problem, Oli. I'm glad you're feeling a bit better now. You've got me to lean on if you need anything else, okay?" I give her a nod and one last hug before leaving her apartment building. We had already retrieved my car earlier in the day, not wanting to get a ticket for being parked in one place for too long. I sat down in my seat and took a deep breath, getting myself ready to go back to my house. I wanted to pack a few of my things before going to a motel for a few nights while I figured out a different place to live. No way was I staying in that house where Joe and I had made so many memories together. It was supposed to be our house, but he made his grave and he could lay in it.
It was about thirty minutes before I reached home, nervous that I might run into Joe. Luckily, he wasn't there. I quickly packed a few of my sentimental things and important documents before pulling out of the driveway. I paused, giving the house one last look before pulling away. Goodbye life with Joe, and hello to a new, single Olivia. This time I wouldn't let anyone play games. And somehow I was going to get back at him and Emily.
