CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE Thurston pushed Becca backward and crossed the threshold into the apartment. Cyrus’s heart raced as the doctor slid the door shut silently and drew the chain. His Cubs cap was pulled low over his eyes and he wore a black windbreaker that concealed a checkered button-up shirt. “Leave her alone,” Cyrus said. “Hands up,” Thurston said, eyeing him. “Unless you want her to die along with you.” Slowly, Cyrus put his hands up where Thurston could see them. Thurston motioned Becca to keep moving backward until she stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Cyrus.
