Chapter4

Whispers in the Gilded Cage Isabella drifted in and out of darkness for what felt like days. Pain pulsed through her skull like a relentless drum, a sharp reminder of the wall she had met so violently. Voices filtered through the haze low, guarded murmurs carrying the heavy weight of the Rossi empire. In the antechamber just beyond her reinforced door, the nurse, a stern woman in her late forties with steel-gray hair pulled into a tight bun, adjusted a tray of medical supplies. Marco, Lorenzo’s scarred and formidable underboss, leaned against the wall, arms crossed over his broad chest. His presence alone radiated quiet lethality, the kind forged in years of blood oaths and midnight executions. “She’s been here for a week already,” Marco said, voice low. “Most girls who pull stunts like that? They’d already be one more body in the Don’s pile. Quick, clean, forgotten. But this one…” He shook his head, a rare flicker of curiosity crossing his hardened features. “I feel like she’s special. Different. The way she fought? Not some terrified civilian. She had skills. Fire. And the boss… he’s watching her closer than I’ve seen him watch anyone in years. I don’t know what he has planned, but she sure as hell isn’t lucky.” The nurse snorted, dabbing antiseptic on a gauze pad with more force than necessary. “Special. That’s one word for it. The girl’s a walking liability. Mouth like a razor and the survival instincts of a cornered cat. If she keeps testing him, even ‘special’ won’t save her. The Don doesn’t keep loose ends. He ties them off permanently.” Marco shrugged, the movement rippling the fine fabric of his dark shirt. Mafia aura clung to him like smoke, quiet power, unshakable loyalty, and the faint scent of gun oil beneath expensive cologne. Either way, I’ll check on her again later. The queen doesn’t have any f**k off to do right now. She’s busy.” He pushed off the wall and left, his footsteps fading down the corridor like a receding threat. The nurse turned back toward the inner room just as Isabella stirred on the silk sheets. Her eyelids fluttered open, vision blurry. The opulent basement cell swam into focus rich fabrics, dim lighting, the faint hum of hidden ventilation. Her head throbbed mercilessly. “Where… am I?” she croaked, voice raw. The nurse approached without warmth, her expression flat and clinical. “You’re awake, thought you wouldn't , you’ve been here for three days now. Finally, stay still while I check you.” Isabella tried to sit up, wincing. Memories crashed back: the fight, the hairpin, Lorenzo’s veiny hand around her throat, the throw. “This isn’t real. It can’t be. Let me out of here, the f**k , three days? “You have got to be kidding” The nurse didn't answer instead she said “Eat first,” the nurse said curtly, setting a fresh tray beside the bed broth, soft bread, and water. “And don’t test me, girl. The Don is more than capable of stopping your meals entirely. Or worse. You’ve already cost him two good men with your little escape attempt. Be grateful you’re still breathing.” Isabella’s stomach growled despite everything. The fight had drained her. “Fine,” she muttered. “Anything is fine.” The nurse helped her sit up properly, cleaning the cut on her temple with efficient but impersonal hands. As she worked, the older woman’s demeanor softened just a fraction. Perhaps the silence grew too heavy, or perhaps something in Isabella’s exhausted eyes reminded her of ghosts from her own past. “I have a son,” the nurse said quietly, almost to herself. “Had two children, actually. Beautiful boys. They’re gone now. Violence took them from rival families, the kind of war that doesn’t care about innocent mothers waiting at home.” Her voice remained steady, but her hands trembled slightly as she changed the bandage. “When I had nothing left, no way to survive, the boss came. Lorenzo. He gave me purpose again. A place here. Protection. Service in exchange for the roof over my head and the chance to keep breathing. I’ve been with this family a long time. You’d do well to learn from that.” Isabella listened, the words painting a darker picture of the world she’d stumbled into. Family. Loss. Loyalty bought in blood. “I had a normal life,” she whispered, more to herself than the nurse. “An older sister who nagged me about dating the wrong boys. A little brother who begged for sketches of superheroes. Cousins at every holiday picnic blankets on the grass, my mom’s lemonade, laughter until the stars came out. I was just an artist. Part-time shifts, extra classes… then my best friend called that Monday morning.” The nurse paused, listening as Isabella’s voice gained fragile strength. (Beginning of flashback) “‘Hey babes, I’m coming over to see you.’ I couldn’t believe it. She flew in and I was so excited. Finished my art class, rushed through my shift, picked her up at the airport. We caught up like old times talking about all the trouble we used to get into. Then the club. The drink. The alley…” Isabella’s throat tightened. “Now I’m here. Whatever ‘here’ is.” (End of flashback) The nurse finished cleaning her up and stepped back, expression almost pitying. “Family is everything in this life, whether by blood or by choice. The Don protects his own fiercely. But outsiders who cause chaos? They learn quickly or they don’t last. Adjust your attitude, girl. Be smart. Play the game. Defiance might feel good in the moment, but it will get you killed faster than you can blink. Show him respect. Maybe you’ll find a way to survive this.” Isabella nodded slowly, absorbing the advice even as rebellion simmered beneath the surface. The nurse’s words carried the weight of hard-earned survival in Lorenzo’s brutal world. Mafia aura permeated everything: the quiet power plays, the casual references to death, the sense that every kindness came with invisible chains. A soft knock sounded. The door opened. Lorenzo Rossi stepped inside, his tall frame commanding the entire space. The scar through his eyebrow caught the low light, his dark eyes sweeping over the scene of the cleaned-up Isabella, the nurse, the remnants of the meal. Power rolled off him in waves, the quiet confidence of a man who had built an empire on blood and loyalty. “Mmm, having a nice time I see.”
