The Golden Cage

Her reflection stared back at her from the mirror as Maisie carefully curled strands of fiery red hair and pinned them into place. Natalia studied the familiar face before her. Her almond-shaped green eyes were framed by long dark lashes, while a small straight nose and full lips completed features, she had never been allowed to ignore. At five-foot-four, she was not particularly tall, but her figure curved into an elegant hourglass shape. She knew she was beautiful. The pack had spent twenty years reminding her of that fact. Unfortunately, beauty had only made her more isolated. "Should I pin your hair up, Natalia?" Maisie asked, drawing her from her thoughts. Natalia sighed dramatically. "If I say no, are you going to spend the next ten minutes explaining why it's more appropriate?" Maisie giggled. "Well, it is dinner with Alpha Greythorn, and your dress has a lovely neckline..." "Fine, fine. Pin it up." The two girls exchanged amused glances through the mirror before bursting into laughter. "Honestly, Natalia," Maisie said, shaking her head. "It's dinner with the Alpha. Your parents would have a fit if you weren't presented like a perfectly polished doll. Pretty, poised, with absolutely no independent thoughts." Natalia snorted. Sadly, there was more truth in those words than either of them cared to admit. From the day she was born—beneath the brightest Blood Moon in living memory—Natalia had been taught that her life did not belong to her. She was a True Luna. A blessing from the Moon Goddess. The future salvation of the Goodhaven Pack. Everything else came second. She had grown up hearing stories about the celebration that followed her birth. The pack had feasted for two weeks. Wine flowed freely. Gifts poured in from neighbouring packs. Her mother, Penelope, had basked in every moment of the attention. Before Natalia's birth, her parents had lived simple but respected lives. Bobby and Penelope owned a modest farm that supplied crops to the pack. According to her father, they had been happy. They dreamed of raising a large family, serving their Alpha, and building a peaceful life together. But years passed without children. Then, in their mid-thirties, they conceived Natalia. Everything changed. A few days after her birth, Alpha Greythorn moved the family from their farmhouse into a grand estate built specifically for the future True Luna. The farm was given to another young couple within the pack—Haley and Arden. Three days after Natalia was born, they welcomed a daughter of their own. Maisie. Natalia smiled softly at the thought. If she had been given a choice, she would have chosen Maisie as a sister. The girls had grown up side by side despite Penelope's obvious disapproval. While Natalia's mother viewed the friendship as beneath her daughter's status, the girls had simply become experts at sneaking around. Eventually, on Natalia's sixteenth birthday, Alpha Greythorn intervened. Maisie was offered a position as Natalia's companion, allowing them to live together under the same roof. It was one of the greatest gifts Natalia had ever received. She wasn't ungrateful for her title. Truly, she wasn't. She understood what being a True Luna meant to the pack. She knew how desperately Goodhaven needed hope. Yet the title often felt less like a blessing and more like a set of chains. Every year, they seemed to tighten a little more. Natalia's childhood had been anything but ordinary. Once her family had risen in status, Penelope devoted herself entirely to shaping her daughter into the image of a perfect True Luna. Natalia learned etiquette before she learned friendship. She wore elaborate dresses, kept immaculate nails, and mastered the art of speaking softly and smiling politely. While other children attended the pack school, Natalia was educated at home. Her lessons focused on pack affairs, reading, music, dancing, and elocution. She was regularly displayed before influential pack members who praised her beauty and marvelled at how perfect their future Luna appeared. The attention inflated Penelope's ego. It made Natalia want to run screaming into the woods. Her mother wasn't cruel. Not exactly. She simply expected perfection and had little patience whenever Natalia failed to provide it. The problem was that Natalia had never fit the image her mother wanted. She loved climbing trees. She came home with muddy boots and tangled hair. Her wolf, Haven, spent half her time rolling in mud pits and chasing birds through the forest. Natalia preferred history books to etiquette lessons, cheeseburgers to formal dinners, and lively debates to polite conversation. Sometimes she didn't want to be the True Luna. Sometimes she just wanted to be Natalia. A slightly awkward young woman who laughed too loudly and ate too quickly. The only people who truly knew that version of her were Maisie and Haven. "Natalia." Her mother's overly sweet voice drifted through the bedroom door. Natalia winced. "I'm coming, Mother." She shot Maisie a pleading look. "Please save me." Maisie laughed. "If I had that kind of power, I'd use it on myself first. Come on. Let's get you dressed before she breaks the door down." A short while later, Natalia stood in a shimmering deep-green gown that flashed hints of purple whenever it caught the light. After slipping on matching shoes, she headed downstairs. Her mother was waiting at the bottom. "Finally," Penelope said. "We mustn't keep Alpha Greythorn waiting." "Oh, leave the girl alone." Natalia's father emerged from the sitting room with a warm smile. "You look beautiful, darling." He kissed her forehead and offered his arm. Ignoring her mother's exasperated expression, Natalia happily accepted. Together, they left the house. Visits with Alpha Greythorn were always bittersweet. In private, he treated her like a granddaughter rather than a future Luna. They shared tea and cakes, debated politics, played board games, and discussed pack history for hours. Those moments were some of Natalia's favourites. Public gatherings, however, were another matter entirely. There, she was expected to smile, remain silent, and look decorative. "Natalia, my dear!" Alpha Greythorn strode toward her as soon as she entered. "You look lovely as always." He took both her hands warmly. "I am so glad you could join us tonight. There are a few matters we need to discuss." The smile in his eyes should have reassured her. Instead, anxiety curled in her stomach. As the Alpha released her, Natalia glanced around the room. Her breath caught. Several Alphas from neighbouring packs had gathered inside the manor. Some she recognized. Others she had never seen before. She looked toward her father, silently asking if he knew what was happening. He merely shrugged. That did nothing to ease her concern. Meanwhile, Penelope was in her element. She drifted from group to group, introducing herself as the mother of the True Luna and basking in the attention. More than once, she dragged Natalia into conversations, only to tighten her grip on Natalia's wrist whenever she attempted to say more than a polite greeting. Seen but not heard. The familiar expectation settled over her shoulders like a heavy cloak. When dinner was finally announced, Natalia nearly sighed with relief. She was escorted into the dining room and seated to Alpha Greythorn's right. Her father sat beside her. Her mother, naturally, occupied the seat to the Alpha's left. Once everyone had settled, Alpha Greythorn rose from his chair. "Thank you all for joining us tonight," he began. "Many of you have travelled great distances to be here." The room fell silent. "For those who have not yet had the pleasure of meeting her, this is Natalia." Every eye turned toward her. "Our blessing from the Moon Goddess. Our True Luna." Natalia forced a polite smile. Alpha Greythorn's gaze softened. "Who will soon be celebrating her twenty-first birthday." He gave her a small wink. Natalia's blood ran cold. Whatever this dinner was about, she suddenly had a terrible feeling she wasn't going to like it.
